Low TSH in pregnancy - how bad is this?

So I was in hospital 2 days ago because of fast heart rate and they did blood tests and monitored me for several hours. The blood results show that I have low TSH (0.17), which is pretty low right? Is this really serious and can it be harmful for the baby? I’m 25+3 weeks pregnant today.

The honest answer is I don't know. I have Graves Disease (overactive thyroid) and am stable on medication since having a partial thyroidectomy nearly a year ago. My T3 and T4 are within the normal range but my TSH has been continually <0.01 throughout. Nobody seems to know why. I'm 36 weeks pregnant and my baby is growing well with no signs of a goitre at the moment. I tested positive for thyroid antibodies earlier in the pregnancy and as a result, the baby will be checked over very carefully by a neonatologist once he is born.

I'm sorry that doesn't help you but hopefully might help reassure you that thyroid problems during pregnancy can be managed and don't always mean bad news.

Yes, it does sound low (should be at least 0.2 or 0.3?). But the important thing is that it’s been picked up so that you can now be treated if needed and monitored. So chances are everything will be fine.

Have they checked your T3 and T4? Make sure you get a speedy referral to an endocrinologist.

I had it the other way with high TSH, but once it’s under control it minimises the risk.

Thank you guys. The doctor at the hospital contacted my GP who will give me an appointment next week sometime to check my heart rate again and also thyroid. It seems as though they’re not that concerned about it if they’re taking their time?

Did they give you your ft4 level? My tsh is 0.04 because of the medication I'm in but ft4 is within range so the consultant isn't worried. Hopefully you get to talk to a specialist soon

@siobhanmt247 im not sure if they measured my ft4 level tbh. I don’t think so, it didn’t say anywhere on the report.
