Propranolol in pregnancy (10mg) safe?

Is this medication safe to take, I mean is it safe for the baby? I’ve been prescribed this by an A&E doctor for my super high heart rate. I’ve only taken it once so far and it does seem to be helping and I’m meant to take 10mg for 2 weeks. Or perhaps 10mg for a week and 5mg for the second week if it works well.

I forgot to say I’m currently 25+2 weeks pregnant.

I would check with your midwife or GPz I take it for anxiety and worry about getting pregnant again as I would maybe not be able to take it anymore but when I looked it up it seemed to say it was fine early on but when the baby is bigger it does sometimes also slow it’s heart but there hasn’t been a huge amount of research done due to obviously pregnant women not wanting to volunteer for that

its probably one of those things they’d weigh up the benefits to the risks in your case

I was on this for anxiety, I think it was 60mg a day. When I found out I was pregnant back in Jan, I asked the GP if I could still take it and she said to come off it right away. I wasn't expecting it, like PP said from what I had read I thought it was later on in pregnancy it was to be stopped. I didn't think to ask the dr why, her tone was enough to make me stop taking it without asking questions. That being said, you are on a smaller dose and I assume whoever prescribed it knew you were pregnant? I would double check with your midwife/GP. X

I’m only on 10mg a day and I’ve taken it for 3 days now but I’m so scared to take it because I’ve read that it can interfere with baby’s growth. I don’t want to do anything that will harm baby in any way and I’m only 25+4 yet, I don’t want anything bad to happen I’m so scared. I don’t know what to do. I’ve texted my midwife to ask her she hasn’t replied yet, and it’s Sunday so I can’t contact my GP either. The hospital prescribed it to me for my fast heart rate and it does seem to be helping if I take it everyday but I don’t want to if there’s a risk to baby. I don’t know what to do 🥺

I've been taking 20mg a day for migraines since I became pregnant, I'm 25 weeks now and there's been no ill effects so far. My consultant has said its perfectly safe to take throughout pregnancy at a small dose. He has booked me in for a growth scan at 28 weeks just to check on the baby but at 20 weeks he was already on the larger side so its having no effects to my baby.
As your dose is half of mine and you're only going to be on it for a limited time I can't see any problem with taking it.

dreamerkr · 31/07/2022 19:27

@Itsyoouu thank you so much, that’s reassuring. The doctor did say to me that it will be fine and I’m already gonna have growth scans but I’ve still been so scared about taking this medicine. 🥺
I didn’t take it last night and my heart rate is higher today...

The doctor knew you were pregnant.
They wouldn't have prescribed it if it wasn't safe for the baby.

dreamerkr · 31/07/2022 19:36

@TeenDivided thats true... 🥺
I will continue taking it
