Hi I. Was due to be induced today. Started the morning warned about delays inductions. Then received a phone call saying the delays go back weeks and was asked to go to a hospital 90 miles away. Agreed due to reasons for being induced.
Then received a phone call saying that hospital no longer had beds and it would be pot luck where in the country was free tomorrow.

I fully understand that emergency's happen and luckily I'm not a emergency just previous postpartum issues mixed with a very large baby.

However I live in a city with 2 maternity hospitals with 3 other maternity hospitals within a hour drive and there wasn't one space except a hospital nearly 2 hours away. Do you think this is extreme for nhs and why are they booking so many in which won't happen.

Sad to say, my experience was much like this 17 years ago. But things have definitely got worse.

Ducksurprise · 28/07/2022 14:28

Another that had this experience nearly 20 years ago, it isn't right and it has got worse, but sadly poor maternity care is nothing new.

Just hope you don't go into labour before they book you in. I gave birth in triage a few months ago because there were no staff available to admit and monitor me on the delivery suite.

I have nothing helpful to add, I just wanted to say good luck for when the birth happens, and I hope it goes smoothly :)

I remember being induced 4 years ago, I could see people being turned away after waiting hours for a bed

PinkBump2022 · 28/07/2022 15:30

yes I was turned away also my induction had to be carried out I had a very poorly baby and my labour needed monitored the whole way through he’s 5 now, but my induction was set for a Tuesday so I sent off my other children to their nans the night before and I was told
id get a call Monday night with the time to go in on Tuesday. Nobody rang me so I rang them, they said they would ring me back before 11pm. They didn’t I rang them back, they said they would ring me in the morning, the morning came around and I got a phone call…..it started with we are very very sorry… there are no beds!! No beds on L&D and no beds in special care! I was 39 weeks and had my sweep 2 days earlier and was already on the brink of labour so where did this leave me!! If my baby was born at home he would need major medical intervention at birth in order to survive so this wasn’t an option for me. Later that evening they called me and squeezed me in but I had to get there within 10mins or my bed would be taken!!! I rushed as fast as I could and rbey quickly broke my water before the bed was taken. I laboured very fast and my baby was born soon after and just as planned he was very poorly!! Went into respiratory arrest at 6 minute old!!
rhe nhs is struggling and the country is sinking! My daughter couldn’t get a school
place for 18 months we had to home school while she waited on 4 waiting lists.

im 30 weeks pregnant and may well just have myself a home birth this time round

Mydogbog · 28/07/2022 15:34

Oh I'm very sorry to hear this is nothing new. I did expect a few delays luckily my baby is just large and they would rather get her out safely and not unhealthy so I do understand how lucky I am just so upsetting waiting "my turn" when I'm organising childcare and also anxious over it all. However, I'm sure in a year I will look back and laugh at now xx

I now work for the NHS - I decided to stay silent as the reality can be very upsetting.

I hope you'll have a safe delivery, a bit closer to home.

Bunty55 · 28/07/2022 16:02

After I had my third baby nearly thirty years ago, they came and asked me to leave just as as I was breast feeding the baby as they needed the bed. I will never forget this
