Did a sweep work for you?

I've had one offered to me but I'm on the fence about accepting as I've heard it had the opposite effect for some people.

How did having a sweep go for you?

A sweep is I think the mildest form of "natural" induction. Very quick and normally not painful.
I had 2 in my first pregnancy to avoid the proper hospital induction. I went to 41+2 so about 3 days after the 2nd sweep...

BFPDec21 · 27/07/2022 10:12

I'll have it between 38 and 39 weeks (I'm 37+6) but I'm not sure how much it can really help. I'm having an induction next week due to GD either way though.

Thing is no one knows if it worked or not - as how do you differentiate between the sweep working and labour starting when it was going to anyway?

The main risk is that of infection/waters breaking - but if they're wanting to induce you anyway because of GD I'd DEFINITELY choose sweeps first. I'd try anything to avoid an induction tbh.

Doesiteverhelp · 27/07/2022 11:41

Also it's not guaranteed a sweep will be doable so early.
The cervix needs to be favourable.
Id say try it either way.

Jaaxe · 28/07/2022 09:12

Yes worked for me, had it in the morning, went into that afternoon

BFPDec21 · 28/07/2022 09:45

How far along were you @Jaaxe? I think that's my hope!

I have mine booked in now with a planned induction next week so no idea if there will be another attempt.

I was overdue, 41 weeks, midwife refused to do one at 40 weeks…this was with my first 9 years ago, i don’t know when they offer sweeps now x

LooneyToon · 28/07/2022 10:04

Nope.. had 3 goes with last 2 pregnancies and didnt work.

BFPDec21 · 28/07/2022 10:10

Oh no. It seems they've been successful for people a bit later on when overdue but not much before from what I've found online so far.

I'll be 38 weeks. Hopefully my cervix is favourable but I won't hold my breath.

Some ball bouncing, spicy food and a walk for me it is!

I had one the day after my due date... it bloody hurt but Labour started instantly! Albeit a long slow labour... ds was born 32 hours later

Threelittlelambs · 28/07/2022 11:23

Add in sex and a hot curry to cover all bases.

IceStationZebra · 28/07/2022 11:24

I had a baby a couple of days after having a sweep (on my due date). But I also walked loads, drank raspberry tea and sat on a bouncy ball, and was already 1cm dilated before the sweep.

I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t hurt.

paranoidmumdroid1 · 28/07/2022 11:26

I second Threelittlelambs. It was sex that worked for all three of my dc when sweeps didn't seem to. Something in the sperm.

Melisande90 · 28/07/2022 11:30

They attempted sweep for me at 40+1 and 41+1 but cervix wasn’t favourable either time so it couldn’t be done. I was induced at 41+3, the two failed attempts at sweeps helped me to realise I probably would need to be induced so I was able to accept and prepare mentally for it. Fwiw induction for me was successful albeit slow

cucumberegg · 28/07/2022 11:40

I had a sweep at 39 weeks but it was with my second. I went in to labour before I even got to the car park after the sweep.

BFPDec21 · 29/07/2022 17:02

Had my sweep today and was 1cm dilated. It felt very vigorous.

I have had some bleeding and back pain since.

I'm hoping I don't need my next one and things progress!

Had a sweep at 39+6, I’m now 40+2 with no signs of labour 😭

BFPDec21 · 30/07/2022 09:46

Oh no! Hopefully your baby will be along soon.

I'm really praying it works before my induction. I've got another sweep booked in a couple of days before it.

I've tried a the hottest curry I can tolerate (a Naga), sex, nipple stimulation, birthing ball and still nothing yet apart from some back pain. I'm going to go out on a long walk for the next few days. I'm willing to throw everything at it right now!

Nope. I had a sweep at 40 weeks and another at 41 weeks with DC1. Very uncomfortable!

Had to be induced at 42 weeks in the end.
