Progesterone supplements in TWW and pregnancy - tips please!

Hi everyone 👋 bit of history. Have had 3 early MC this year. Was prescribed progesterone during my last pregnancy after bleeding but sadly lost the baby two days later. I'm wondering now whether to take progesterone during my luteal phase or wait for a BFP so keen to hear other experiences. We didn't actively try this cycle but I'm thinking we may have DTD during my fertile time... I'll explain below.

Since I had the last MC 3 weeks ago, we decided not to TTC for a couple months but then ended up DTD a few times last week and on the weekend simply because we wanted to and I think the closeness helped after everything. I didn't know where I was at with my cycle, as it was over 2 weeks since the MC and didn't seem to be ovulating yet. After we DTD on Fri I started doing LH tests just to see.... They were very negative until Mon when it started to show faintly then on Tues I had an almost positive, but I think due to drinking loads of water in the heat it just never got to blazing positive. I also had a LOT of EWCM on Mon and Tues. We had DTD on Sunday night.

Temping and cervical mucus seems to have confirmed now that I ovulated yesterday (Wednesday). So that's 2.5 days approx after we DTD on Sunday night, around midnight. I'm thinking this means we are in with a chance of conceiving even tho we hadn't planned to try again yet... I'm so so so nervous of another MC if I do fall pregnant this cycle, but ofc I'd also be really happy in some ways... But want to do everything I can to help prevent it. The doctors told me to take progesterone from bfp next time but I've heard many others say to take from 3/4 dpo

So now I'm wondering, should I take the progesterone during my luteal phase this cycle!? Is 2.5 - 3 days close enough to assume it could have happened? Or do we think if I do an early test say 9dpo and start the progesterone from there that could be enough? Also if I do take it and I'm not pregnant will it delay my period - if so how many days? 🤦‍♀️❤️

Thank you for reading this far... Really keen to hear other people's thoughts xx

I always took progesterone during the luteal phase and stopped at 14 DPO if my test was negative.

Have you got progesterone ready?

Skylark1990 · 21/07/2022 14:16

@babyjellyfish thank you - yes I do, I have 10 weeks worth as was prescribed it in last pregnancy. Did you find your period arrived quickly after you stopped taking it?

Within a couple of days, yes.

Will you be able to get more progesterone easily if you get pregnant again? 10 weeks worth will do you for five cycles if you take it during the luteal phase, but if for example you got pregnant on the 5th cycle, I wouldn't advise stopping taking it at the moment you get a BFP, if you get what I mean.

Yes I think I could get it again, I think EPU would prescribe. The thing is they told me to take from bfp not ovulation so not sure they'd support me taking it during the tww!

Hello - old post, sorry to reply now but wondered what your outcome was taking progesterone in the tww. I have some left over from a previous pregnancy which very sadly ended in miscarriage at 12 weeks, I've had another miscarriage in the past too. I don't know if it's safe to take it but very tempted... I know they prescribe for ivf... thanks xx

Skylark1990 · 24/11/2023 21:37

@smashedbanana sorry for your losses ❤️

I didn't end up taking it in the 2ww. I did take it as soon as I got my next bfp until 16+6 and I had a healthy baby girl in April 😊 best of luck to you.

I did the same as @Skylark1990 (but stopped at 14 weeks) - I had been prescribed progesterone after 1 MC, bleed in 2nd pregnancy that then MC, and am now 30w in 3rd pregnancy.

Skylark1990 · 24/11/2023 21:40

I did end up being pregnant this time from this thread... and this is the one that stuck 😊 so strange reading back over it.

There is hope to everyone who has had multiple losses. Sending love to you all and baby dust ❤️

@Skylark1990 is there a reason why you took it til 16 weeks?
I thought you only need progesterone until week 10 when placenta takes over

Skylark1990 · 24/11/2023 21:44

@ChildOfTheMoon

I understand that you need it till 16 weeks which is when the placenta takes over as per Tommy's guidance.

I think the placenta takes over around 12-16 weeks but they can be sure it has at 16 weeks if you see what I mean.

Have a look at the Tommy's website - they are a miscarriage charity.

Thanks I will do. I had ivf and was prescribed progesterone after egg collection and then for one week after the transfer and then they stopped me which would have been 4+3 weeks.
I went 2 weeks without progesterone and had to beg to get it prescribed as I worried I was having another miscarriage and I'm now back on it today I'm 6+3 but they've only given me enough for another 2 weeks . I'm completely baffled by their decisions. They told me the placenta took over around week 8-10

LittleDoveLove · 24/11/2023 23:45

@ChildOfTheMoon EPU prescribed me more but I had had reoccurrent miscarriage. My consultant then gave it me until 16 weeks as per a previous poster has said X
