SGA small babies - will the next baby be small too?

My son was classed as small for gestation age born on the 7th centile.

I'm pregnant with a girl now and wondering if it's likely she'll be small too?
I'm 20 weeks currently and will be having growth scans at 32, 36 & 39 weeks.

My DD was definitely SGA, and my current pregnancy has just been flagged as a FGR risk at 4% growth 32 weeks. There is a strong chance it will happen again, but they can monitor and if they know you are at risk, they might recommend asprin at the start of pregnancy, and more monitoring later on. Your doctor would be the best person to ask I think, as they would know what would be recommended. Good luck OP!

My first was just on the cusp of being classed as SGA. Had lots of growth scans to monitor. She was small, but not exceptionally so.
My second, there was a lot of worry and fuss about it. All the scans, cord blood flow and placenta all checked over etc - no sinister medical reason for his size. He was just small.
Then baby 3 was little miss average 🤷🏻‍♀️

My first was SGA and born at 5lb 3oz which was considerably more than we were warned she would be.

My second was 10lb 2oz. Growth scans had him at around 8lbs.

So it won't necessarily happen again. And it's probably also worth keeping in mind how inaccurate growth scans can be.

My first DS was SGA - born on the third centile, the second was a little bigger, on the 6th centile. I was told I just "make small babies" (I'm not small myself - slim but tall!) With my third, because of small babies history, I got advised to take low dose aspirin and I'm not sure if this is what did it but the third baby was on the 35th centile (6lbs 15oz). All the scans with the third DS were reassuring too, his growth didn't tail off at any point. Hope this helps xx

Did they give you any reason for the SGA? I had issues with the cord blood flow and pregnancy hypertension in my first pregnancy (despite taking asprin from 12weeks). DD was 5lbs 12oz and they have said it's likely that it was due to my BP issues. We haven't started TTC baby #2 yet but the dr i saw after pregnancy #1 suggested that these issues are likely to repeat in pregnancy #2.

My daughter was SGA born on the 2nd centile. I'm 31 weeks pregnant and this baby is on 8th centile, having dropped from 30th centile at 28 weeks. Iv got another scan in 2 weeks and a consultant apt. Looks like il be heading the same way.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, I wasn't given any explanation for the SGA last time. The bump measurements actually put DS at 90th + centile until it tailed off around 38 weeks when I was sent for growth scan, they estimated him to be 7lbs4oz however he was born over 3 weeks later after 41 weeks at 7lbs1oz so safe to say I don't have much faith in growth scans being accurate.

Last time I was prescribed low dose aspirin, high strength vitamin D and advised to carry on with folic acid for the entire pregnancy.

However this time round the consultant said don't bother with any of that, just take a regular vitamin D off the shelf and no need for the aspirin/prolonged folic acid.

To be honest I'm really worried about them wanting to take baby out earlier (I'll have an ELCS booked in around 39-40 weeks is the current plan) and them needing to go to special care. It was mentioned by the consultant if it looks like things are heading the same way they may want to 'take baby out sooner'.

Should clarify, the growth scan estimating 7lbs4oz put him on the 50th centile, but obviously he was born on the 7th over 3 weeks later.
