Hey everyone,

As per the title, I've got my early reassurance scan tomorrow, where I'll be 8+2 (potentially further, but trying to be conservative in my estimate). I'm overweight, size 18, and worried after reading the email stating they are not doing internal scans at this time.

I don't particularly want an internal scan, but it was good to know it was there if transabdominal wasn't appropriate.

Has anyone around the same size had any issues with an abdominal at this stage?

Overall I'm not concerned about the picture quality, I would just very much like to see/hear the heartbeat for some peace of mind before my NHS dating scan.

Thanks in advance,
E. Xx

P.s. please try not to body shame me. I'm aware I'm not my ideal weight, I'm making healthy choices and attempting to very much limit my weight gain through pregnancy by loosely following slimming world and my midwife is happy with this.

Hi 👋 I'm a size 16 and had an early reassurance scan yesterday at 8+1. The lady found baby very easy and was very clear from abdominal scan. I wouldn't worry, just make sure you have a full bladder 😊 x

I had a scan at 7+2, size 18 with most weight carried around my stomach and no issues, was able to see clearly through abdominal scan 😊

Hi. I struggle with abdominal scans as they have often needed to press hard on my belly and it causes me pain where my c section scar is (I had a lot of very early scans last year for what turned out to be a PUL miscarriage).

I had a scan at 10w 5d last week and was worried due to my belly chub (I'm the same size as you) and my scar sensitivities that an abdominal would be impossible and pre-empted I'd need an internal.

The sonongrapher found baby straight away and didn't need to press hard at all. It wasn't even a little uncomfortable.

I know that's a couple of weeks ahead of you, but I was really surprised how easy it was.

Bless you for asking to not be body-shamed. Your weight is no one's business and you don't need to justify it. I hope your scan goes well and your baby is lovely and healthy 😀

Hi I'm a size 16 and had a early scan at 8 weeks exactly and was fine. With my last pregnancy I had to have the other one at 6 weeks as it was so early but you should be fine Smile congratulations!!

Hi op I have a really Chunky tummy and have had a scan at 8 weeks before without any problems. Just drink plenty of water in advance and ask them to try and scan if they seem hesitant.

I'm a size 18/20 and carry my weight on my belly. Only had one internal at 5 weeks. The one at 7 weeks was abdominal and fine 😊 be prepared for something on the scan report like "difficult scan due to maternal habitas" or "difficult scan due to maternal tissue" I know it's a medical thing but does sting me when I see it 😂

I’m a size 22 and had a scan at 8+2. Abdominal with no problems xx

I'm a size 18-20 and had an transabdominal scan at 7+2 (I thought I was 7+6) and no issues at all, saw a lovely clear heart flicker straight away. I fully expected an internal scan but was really happy it didn't have to be.

They kind of go under your belly, along your bikini line, if that makes sense? Be prepared to pull everything down a bit further than you see on TV 😂
