Can a high sugar diet affect/deteriorate/ damage your placenta?

I read something about this and have freaked myself out as I eat quite a lot of sugar. Granted I take a multivitamin every day throughout pregnancy and try to eat as much goodness as I can e.g. eggs, beans, oats (not a fan of fruit), but I know what the good foods I consume are not as much as I should be consuming. I eat a lot of sugary snacks as this is what I crave. I have a normal bmi no sign of GD etc. The article I read probably should've taken with a pinch of salt but now worried. I know there are extremely overweight women who have healthy pregnancies but I wondered whether anyone knew more about this?
