Advice Please - Early Pregnancy Progressed But Not Enough

Hi,

New to Mumsnet here so apologies for any errors.

I went for an early scan at 6 weeks, saw yolk sac and fetal pole but sonographer said we were a little earlier than 6 weeks. Been again exactly two weeks later and the pregnancy has progressed but not as much as sonographer expected, she says we should be seeing visually around 7.5 weeks but embryo looks just 6.5 weeks with no visible heartbeat. She’s said that she believes this is a non continuing pregnancy but I need a blood test from my GP to be 100% sure.

Is there any chance that the embryo might still be viable? Has anyone else had this happen and it turn out ok? I’m concerned about the lack of heartbeat as I had both over the tummy and transvaginal scans but not sure if it might be too early to tell. I’m hoping with all my heart the pregnancy will continue, but I don’t feel very hopeful and won’t hear back from my GP until some time next week. The waiting is hell.

I’ve not had this same experience but perhaps a similar one. I went in thinking I was 7 weeks. I was told either I wasn’t as far along as I thought or I would miscarriage. I had another scan later on and the pregnancy had progressed. I was only 5 weeks at that first scan because I ovulated much later than I thought. I know it’s a stressful wait, but you’ll have more answers from the blood test. My fingers are crossed for you

OP ideally you need 2 HCG blood tests to see the change in the level 48 hours later. In a viable pregnancy the HCG should double, slow rise could indicate ectopic, drop unfortunately indicates miscarriage....one reading doesn't really tell you anything since levels can vary so much from person to person.

(Sorry if you already know this!)

Thank you for taking the time to respond, I’m hoping that the dating of the initial scan was a bit later than it actually was, myself and husband feeling very upset right now. It feels like there’s a huge lack of support before the first MW appointment/12 week scan.

Any advice is welcome, thank you. I know it’s not ectopic based on my first scan, it seems like either the dating was wrong or the embryo has stopped growing. I had prepared myself for it but was still a shock being told it wasn’t progressed enough.
