30 week scan?

Hi, I'm currently 11 weeks pregnant and got my letter for my 12 week scan today, it also included a letter for a scan in November when I will be 30 weeks pregnant, is this normal? I thought I'd get my 20 week scan date first, what is a 30 week scan for?

20 week scan is normally when you find out the sex of the baby. Are you having any extra scans at all for medical reasons or anything?

No, first pregnancy, late 20's BMI of 18.5. Have been told I'm a low risk pregnancy so don't know why I've got this. I have my next midwife appointment next month so can ask then but it just seems odd. I know I'll get my 20 week scan at the start of September but why send a 30 week scan appointment first?

Definitely mention it at your 12 week scan in case they've made a mistake. I think ordinarily you only get scans at 12 and 20 weeks.

They introduced a later “reassurance scan” during covid as there was so much time between appts which they’ve kept on. Mine was at 36 weeks but this could be yours.

Does it give any other information?

No, nothing else in the letter except the general bumf about face masks and parking. I'll mention it at my 12 week scan as well and see if they can tell me more

A lot of hospitals are now offering extra growth scans. As they should 20-40 weeks is a long time without having a scan.

That could be the case with yours, could just be an error though.

I'll have them every 4 weeks from 20 weeks with this pregnancy.

Had them every 4 weeks with my last pregnancy too due to GD.

I'd immediately be thinking they've somehow made a mistake and booked your 20 week scan for 30 weeks. I wouldn't worry though, there's plenty of time to sort it out - either contact your midwife now to check or just raise it after the 12 week scan.

Hey, midwife here. If you were going to have growth scans there would be many more, as we can't assess growth from a single scan. Your best bet is that they've accidentally slotted your 20 week scan in for when you're 30 weeks. Either give them a ring or as you say, mention it at your 12 week scan.

I had the same thing when I got my 12 week scan letter, mine lands at about 28 weeks so assumed they got my 20 week scan dates wrong. I asked the sonographer at my dating / 12 week scan and they said it's a growth scan and seemed to be fairly common to get one, and she said my 20 week scan letter will be in the post and will get it soon. Deffo ask at your 12 week scan but hey it's an extra opportunity to see baby :)
