Hiding pregnancy at a wedding

Hi all,

I'm a guest at a wedding tomorrow. Obviously I won't be drinking (I'm going to drive) but as this is unusual for me, I know that I'll be under suspicion! Any tips on how to deflect attention or any excuses. I really don't want my friends knowing before my parents. I'm only 6 weeks and just found out yesterday that I'm expecting. Thanks so much.

Anyway, the op is driving. That’s all she needs to say.

One thing I have learned as a teacher hearing lots of excuses from children over the years: the more excuses you give, the less likely it is that any of them are true.

godmum56 · 07/07/2022 08:58

I have used the excuse that I have taken an antihistamine tablet and mixed with alcohol, puts me out like a light....it has the merit of being true. Hayfever can strike for the first time at any age.

ChagSameachDoreen · 07/07/2022 08:59

I was pregnant at my own wedding, and I just carried a flute of champagne around with me. Nobody was any the wiser.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/07/2022 08:59

Congratulations 😃

are you going with a partner? If so, it’s your turn to drive, that’s enough.

Antibiotics by another name

Bars are stocking more non-alcohol drinks now - I had a Gordon's Zero G&T out the other night & it was perfectly fine. Heineken Zero is grand too. Rounds might be a struggle though, unless it's a small wedding & you can get the bar staff on side! How about telling people you're on a health kick? You've had a blood test & your liver enzymes were not right? This is a thing, my DH had a similar experience.

Aksbdt · 07/07/2022 09:02

I actually found that if I really wanted to hide it the best thing was to have a alcohol drink that you don’t actually drink and pretend to take sips and get your DP to take actual sips from it then you can say that you’ve had the one you’re allowed with driving

diddl · 07/07/2022 09:05

You'll be driving-but that won't be enough??!!

RoyalMiss · 07/07/2022 09:05

Gin and Tonic (no Gin) lots of ice and a slice of lemon. If it looks like a drink, it is a drink, no one will care

SillyFruit · 07/07/2022 09:06

catwomando · 07/07/2022 07:58

Congratulations!

The tried and tested "I'm on antibiotics" usually does the trick.

Have a lovely time Smile

For most antibiotics this isn't true though.

MrsDoofus · 07/07/2022 09:06

Say you're driving. If they ask whether you're pregnant tell them that's a really inappropriate question and none of their business. As someone who attended a wedding and didn't drink because I was going through (another failed) ivf, it infuriates me that people feel it's appropriate to speculate about your uterus at a public event.

PurpleDaisies · 07/07/2022 09:07

You've had a blood test & your liver enzymes were not right?

That’s just going to invite loads of questions and concern from friends. That’s really not something you want to lie about.

Smogtopia · 07/07/2022 09:11

Accept a glass of bubbles and make it last you most of the day 😂 take teeny sips and just hold it. Nobody will notice and much better than any other excuse

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/07/2022 09:21

Why not just say you’re pregnant?

I find this whole thing of having to wait 3 months ridiculous tbh!

She doesn’t want to because it’s early. That’s a perfectly valid reason.

BlueWhippets · 07/07/2022 09:22

Since when was antibiotics code for being pregnant 😩 I must have missed that memo.

That was the excuse I used at the weekend and no one seemed to question it. No one questioned it previously when I've been on antibiotics for various utis either.
It's a pain though all my friends are terrible for asking 100 questions as to why you're not drinking and then acting like you're a freak for being sober. I hope it goes okay for you

Strangertingz · 07/07/2022 09:24

As drinking and driving is illegal, and very dangerous, that's a good enough 'excuse'. If not you have questionable friends. Have one glass of wine over the meal and no one will question it.

They’ll all know. They’re most likely just polite enough to not say anything.

Mushroo · 07/07/2022 09:28

Antibiotics is definitely code for ‘I’m pregnant’ as you can drink on most antibiotics anyway…

My SIL was pregnant at her 30th and no one noticed. Trick was always holding a drink, and she was pouring drinks for everyone and offering to go to the bar. Her husband drank a lot with them switching the glasses (they told us afterwards) - I didn’t notice anything at the time.

Polpetto · 07/07/2022 09:28

Like pps have said just hold a half full champagne flute and say nothing. No one will ask if you have a drink in your hand. If they do then say you’re driving. Easy.

BlueWhippets · 07/07/2022 09:29

@PurpleDaisies what about all the times I've not been drinking because of antibiotics before but not been pregnant? Would they have assumed then as well?

AdoraBell · 07/07/2022 09:30

I’d love to have a drink but I’m on antibiotics for and ear infection 😢 would be my line.

You frequently don’t drink because of antibiotics? That might be slightly different.

That’s not the situation for most people.

Homegettinginvaded · 07/07/2022 09:31

I genuinely don’t think that people pay enough attention to know if you are drinking !
If the wedding is a decent distance away then driving is a good enough reason because a taxi too expensive…easy !

People always see through the antibiotics line.

OP, you're driving. That's all you need to say. You can't drink because you're driving. That's all.
