I had a smear day before I found out I’m pregnant

Hi everyone,

I went for a health check yesterday and it included a smear. I obviously had no idea I was pregnant which I found out today, we had sex outside of my “fertile window” according to my app and were not actively trying.

So I had the smear and I’m so worried now, I can’t get through to my doc or the person I saw for the health check. The lady had said I had a cervix ectropion- I’d never heard of this before so thought I’d google and one of the reasons is pregnancy- hence why I tested today.

I would be grateful for any feedback regarding smears whilst pregnant.

thank you
Olivia

And sorry forgot to mention, I hadn’t been taking folic acid which I’m gutted about, I’ve obviously started now. Anyone else been in that situation! It’s come as a happy shock. Thank you x

Firstly congrats!!!

I wouldn't worry at all, your little bean is tucked up high and safe in your cervix, there is no way a smear could reach to cause any damage.

Dont worry about folic acid either, just start taking now you no :) x

I had a smear while in very early pregnancy and no issues.

The reason smears are delayed during pregnancy isn't that they are unsafe/pose a risk to your baby. It is because pregnancy results in changes to the cervix which makes interpretation of smears unreliable.
You are fine, congratulations on the pregnancy 🙂

Maybe mention it to your midwife in case they want to check your cervix at some point but really I wouldn't worry. I had a punch biopsy a couple of days before a positive test and all they did for that was a cervical scan around 20 weeks despite it being much more invasive.

I live in a European country smears are routinely given during pregnancy. I was told by my obgyn that there's no risk to the baby. I've had two smears in two different pregnancies.

I had a smear when I was unknowingly pregnant, it must’ve been literally a week after I conceived, the baby was fine

That’s good to know, thanks

I had a colposcopy when unknowingly a few weeks pregnant with no ill effects. I also
didn’t start folic acid until I found out at 5 weeks. Now 27 weeks and so far so good!

I had one 2 days before I found out I was expecting. All was fine. Congratulations x

Hey, was your cervical scan ok? I’ve had two punch biopsies but they haven’t offered me a cervical scan and I’m a bit worried!

All totally fine, I'd entirely forgotten I had it until you asked!
