Positive test 3 weeks ago but 6 weeks pregnant with heartbeat on scan

Hi, I got a positive pregnancy test 3 weeks 1 day ago (not an early response test). And I got a peak on ovulation test 12 days prior to that.

I went for a private scan 2 days ago that gave me a crl .41cm and heartbeat of 117. This put me at 6 weeks 1 day.

I had some light pink discharge so went for a scan in early pregnancy unit today and they measure it as crl .28cm and heartbeat 131. They put me as 5 weeks 6 day pregnant and weren't concerned. I said I had a positive test 3 weeks ago but they didn't seem to believe me. I have only had 2 periods since my missed miscarriage so they said they don't believe the date of my last period.

Both scans were transadominal.

Has anyone else been in the position of a positive pregnancy test not matching up with the scan dates? I am hoping it is because the measurements are so small at this stage there is room for error.

Thanks!

Was your Ovulation test an OPK? Because OPK can also be used to test for pregnancy.

Chances are when you thought you were ovulating, you were actually pregnant.

Congratulations and fingers crossed for you.

I think for them to be accurate before 12 weeks they need to do a transvaginal scan. I know when I went for a 9 week scan it had to be done that way to be accurate. Might be worth seeing if you can have a transvaginal scan either nhs or privately.

Isn’t pregnancy counted from the date of your last period? That sounds about right in that case.

HSKAT · 05/07/2022 10:10

Not sure if your getting confused but you go by the date of your last period so sounds right to me.
Don't worry about being put afew days ahead or behind, it's very normal this early on.
You'll get your proper due date and how far you are at 12 weeks scan.

Congrats Flowers

From my last period I would be 7 weeks 1 day so it looks like I am measuring a week behind on the scan.

I don't understand how I can be measured at 6 weeks pregnant but got a positive test 3 weeks ago as I wouldn't think a positive test would show that early. I am concerned the baby is not growing properly.

I’m 34 weeks pregnant and according to scans, a week ahead of where I am based on conception date.

HSKAT · 05/07/2022 10:19

You could have implanted later op.

I think you need to take some reassurance that EPU weren't concerned.

I know it's not easy I've been there before. Sending love

I think this sounds totally normal. You got a positive OPK about 33 days ago (?) so you probably ovulated and conceived about 32 days ago which would be 3 June, making you 6 weeks pregnant now (I'm probably too invested but I typed it into an online calculator for due dates). I don't know why they wouldn't believe you got a positive test three weeks ago as that would be exactly when you would if you were testing regularly.

@kmbegs

Thanks for response, peak ovulation day was 31st May. Positive test was 13th June. I think as I am measuring 6 weeks today on the scan that would mean I got my positive test at 2 weeks 6 days which I didn't think a standard pregnancy test would pick up? As far as I am aware you need to be closer to 4 weeks pregnant for a test to pick up pregnancy hormones?

@HSKAT , thanks for the response. I understand I could have implanted later but it's confusing me how the pregnancy test picked up that I was pregnant 3 weeks ago (which means I had already implanted) but I am only 6 weeks pregnant. My understanding was I would be roughly 4 weeks give or take a couple of days when I got a positive pregnancy test.

I suppose it's just a waiting game now!

So pregnancy is counted from the first day of your last period, which isn't foolproof if you have long cycles as it assumes a 28 day cycle. But if you get pregnant then by the time you get a positive test two weeks (ish) after ovulating you're considered 4 weeks pregnant because it counts the time from your last period. If that makes sense!

So if you had a positive OPK on 31May, you probably ovulated/ conceived on 1 June. When you tested on 13 June you would have been technically almost 4 weeks pregnant because pregnancy is counted from before you actually conceived. And then it's been a few weeks so you'd be 6ish weeks now.

I hope this makes sense. But if you type when you conceived into this calculator it says you're 6 weeks pregnant so let that do the thinking for you! www.pampers.co.uk/pregnancy/due-date-calculator-result-week-default/6
