Hi guys. My baby is now six days old. My sleeping issues are becoming less about being in agony and more about being kept awake by baby, which is easier to take.

A community midwife did turn up day after discharge. When she left she said a midwife would show up the next day sometime between 8:30am to 4:30pm. Waited all day yesterday, and nothing. Phoned their number today to be told they have no idea if or when someone will turn up. So it's a waiting game and not able to relax. The midwife on friday arrived when he was fussy and was pretty brisk, not listening to me, and not helpful.

Hoping part of the pain is tight stitches from c section and might get some relief when they turn up to remove them. Also have what has been described to me as a 'small gape' in the wound when they finally looked at it on morning of discharge (after it had been oozing for days). It's on the right side which is def the side I'm having the most pain. No visable oozing since fresh bandage put on though.

Also discovered an interesting titbit. Emergency c sections tend to cause more damage as it's done in middle of labour, bigger cut, have to get baby out fast. And require more pain relief due to this than your average elective c section.

So if anyone else is being dismissed as needing anything stronger than paracetamol and ibuprofen post emergency c section, that may be why.

Tbh most of the midwives I had in hospital didn't even know I'd had a c section, let alone an emergency one. All a bit of a shambles from postnatal ward onwards.

My biggest advice to anyone who hasn't given birth is to bring pain meds with you, so you can administer yourself if your midwives repeatedly forget.

Thanks @AbiGoLucky @Magik8ball @Isonthecase ive come up to be assessed anyway, as baby hasn’t moved at all this morning, well at least I don’t think I have. I think I’m just at that panic about everything stage lol

@SantiagoSister that sounds awful. Really hope you get some movement and relief soon. It must be so worrying for you

SantiagoSister · 07/08/2022 10:24

Hi @Sunandsea77, thank you for keeping me company in the ‘overdue and really wanting to avoid induction’ boat! Sorry you had a traumatic experience with your last baby, it’s completely understandable that you’d want to avoid induction again this time. It’s so frustrating when your cervix isn’t playing ball for the sweeps, that sounds so painful what you went through 😩 I was bishops score 4 last Wednesday and I’m back to see the midwife tomorrow so really hoping it’s progressed since then and they can do a sweep.

Good luck for tomorrow, I hope they can provide you with some reassurance and advice as it’s horrible feeling so worried like you do. Hang in there, hopefully it wont be long before we get to have our babies in our arms 🤞🏼 xx

Well that was an exciting night!

They decided in the end as I hadn't been sick for some time I didn't need cannulating and I stayed in the birthing centre. Was there for about four hours before with contractions increasing in strength and frequency, but they figured I was still in the latent phase and sent me home. Have to admit I was gutted, cried (so embarrassing!) and tried to argue saying I thought it would be soon and I was terrified of not making it back to the hospital in time, but they insisted saying it could be up to two weeks. Finally I agreed and off I went home.

Contractions just got all the stronger in the car, then when we got home I literally got in, went to the toilet, started to change into my pyjamas and my waters broke. Immediately the contractions came on like crazy with urge to push. I was terrified and told DH to call am ambulance as I didn't think we'd make it to hospital but he assured me we'd be there in 15 mins (it's normally 25 mins ish). We definitely broke a few traffic laws on the way up!! Just a good thing it was like 5am. I yelled the whole way there partly from the contractions, party out of fear and we just made it as the urge to push was getting unbearable. Thank god a midwife happened to be in the hospital foyer when DH ran in calling for help and she got me a wheelchair. She ran with me up to the birth centre (me screaming at her to hurry up the whole time 🤦) and got me back into the exact same room I'd been in 45 mins before. Transferred to the bed and the baby was born within 20 minutes.

So that was very scary!!

But the main thing is... Baby Lois was born at 5:19 this morning weighing 7 lbs 5 oz and she is perfect 🥰

CoalCraft · 07/08/2022 10:36

She was at 38+1 I'm terms of gestation. Still can't believe we got to term. You guys, I got to keep her! She wasn't whisked straight off to NICU!! And now she's still here with me and I can hold her and feed her and do all those things mums are supposed to do. It's amazing!

AbiGoLucky · 07/08/2022 13:03

@Unsure1010 yes definitely best to get checked out then, even if it's just a panic at least you will know when they do their checks and can put your mind at rest hopefully 🙂 fingers crossed all goes well for you!

@CoalCraft Ahhhh that was intense just reading that!! So happy for you that you made it in time and your little one didn't have to go to NICU. I do sometimes think they're very quick to send people home, especially after all the contractions you were having it's a bit odd they told you it could be another two weeks!! Well chuffed for you though congrats! 🍼🤱

CoalCraft · 07/08/2022 14:24

@AbiGoLucky Thank you!!

The weird thing was they wouldn't examine my cervix - surely that would have told them I really was close?? But they said "no point examining as it's an infection risk and you deffo aren't close yet". I should have questioned it more probably but they seemed so sure!

I think the problem was that maybe my contractions weren't as painful as they expected? I was able to talk/walk through them which maybe made them seem less intense when clearly they were actually working on my cervix.

But anyway, all's well that ends well. We're home now and it's magic, about to give her her first bath 🥰

ToCaden · 07/08/2022 15:46

@CoalCraft wow that's intense.

I do think they sometimes rely on average labour signs, and not everyone fits into that box. I went in because I got up at night to pee and noticed blood. No other symptoms. Placenta previa so instant come get checked out.

They hooked me up for monitoring and turns out I was in full on labour. They kept looking at the machine showing contractions and asking 'do you feel that?'

Towards the end the most I felt was maybe a little twinge possibly when these apparent contractions happened. Hardly noticiable if at all. I slept through most of it until they were ready for c section.

Had I not got up to pee I may have just slept through at home.

Isonthecase · 07/08/2022 16:52

Lovely news @CoalCraft , so pleased for you 😊

Tacoboutit · 07/08/2022 17:00

Wow that’s a crazy story @CoalCraft but glad your little one is here and safe and you’re home! Lois is a beautiful name x

PopGoesBang · 07/08/2022 17:02

@CoalCraft I'm so chuffed for you and baby Lois! What an entrance. She clearly knows how she is going to do things. Congratulations and enjoy those snuggles ( and we'll done to your DH on the shaving of 10 minutes off the journey! I'm sure the roads being quiet was the only reason Wink)

Beth262 · 07/08/2022 19:25

@CoalCraft Congratulations! Welcome to the world Lois 💕

CoalCraft · 07/08/2022 21:19

@ToCaden My first was like that! I virtually couldn't feel contractions at all until I was in the active labour. I could SEE my bump hardening, but couldn't feel it. Crazy how different it can be for different people.

Thanks for the congrats all 🥰 We've been home for about eight hours now, had both sets of grandparents round and are now about to see how our first night goes. DD1 so far curious but a bit bemused by her baby sister 😁

Unknown6 · 07/08/2022 21:38

Those who had sections, have many successful at being able to feed?

I had to give formula at first as I was shaking too much from all the drugs and then I was a bit out of it from pain and pain killers.
My baby latches but will not suckle, have got my milk in now, so was going to pump to try and keep supply for longer, but she's a week old tomorrow, so not sure if it's going to happen

Beth262 · 07/08/2022 22:06

Hope all goes well with the section tomorrow @madeleine85 x

Thanks @Beth262

@CoalCraft im so happy for you!!! That is just lovely news after your prior preterm experience. Hope you are enjoying lovely snuggles with baby Lois!

to any other mamas this weekend congratulations 🍾🎉

Gem2811 · 08/08/2022 01:21

Congratulations to all the new arrivals over the weekend. Have to say I'm very jealous 39 weeks and I'm done with the insomnia and headaches 😂

PopGoesBang · 08/08/2022 07:04

@Unknown6 I can't answer re the section and feeding. But I'd assume offering baby boob and seeing how they do each time would hopefully encourage the suckling. I'd guess as teats free flow they just need to realise that with a little work they'll get milk from boob too.
We have a really good local breastfeeding group and they are on fb too. Might be worth seeing if anything in your area and someone you can ask who will know more.
I just wanted to say I'm sure it's not too late.
Hope you are feeling better and in less pain now.

ToCaden · 08/08/2022 08:31

@Unknown6 I didn't start feeding until day after discharge, so four days post srction due to experience of post natal ward. My milk didn't really come in until some signs that day. Slow going at first. Just offer the nipple often, and pumping a great idea to increase supply.

My pump only arrived recently so haven't tried that yet, but supply has increased loads. I try to start him at breast for most feedings, alternate between nipples when he gets frustrated, and when he gets too frustrated top up with formula.

ToCaden · 08/08/2022 08:34

@Unknown6 oh, and for the latching / suckling thing I use nipple sheilds. They're easier for him to latch, and brcause they're like a bottle teat he instantly knew to suckle.

CoalCraft · 08/08/2022 10:21

@Gem2811 Hope it happens for you soon!

Isonthecase · 08/08/2022 10:48

Moany post I'm afraid!

I've picked up a stomach bug so been up since 3am lying on the bathroom floor feeling sorry for myself and now my back hurts and the baby has taken it upon himself to stage a full blown karate tournament in my uterus. To top it all off I can't take any painkillers because of the vomiting and my nipples really hurt from expressing yesterday. Needless to say older kids are not being respectful of how delicate mummy feels, despite a promising start when one brought me his favourite blanket to tuck me in and his favourite story.

This could go on for another 4 weeks.

Unknown6 · 08/08/2022 11:31

@ToCaden , thank you, I feel like I didn't have the greatest time in the hospital once baby was delivered either, the 1st 8 hours were great but then I was moved to a different floor and I just felt like I was an annoyance. My hubby helped loads but outside of visiting hours, having to call the midwife to pick up my baby for me for feeding/ changing etc was difficult.

@Unknown6 I was successful on the first day in hospital, and since then have been pretty unsuccessful - in fact on the second day in hospital (when I was discharged) the midwives saw us struggling and recommended we top up with formula. Though my milk only properly came in on day 2 or 3 I think. I'm sure it's not too late for you.

Quinn doesn't latch properly, he just wants the tip of my nipple not any of my aureola - when midwives have shown me what to do, they seem to really force his head on, which is fine for them but very difficult for me when it's 3am and he's bright red and screaming out of frustration.

Then often when he does go on, he suckles for a bit then seems to fall asleep really quickly - almost like he gets bored or tired.

So I'm offering boobs first all the time, then if he seems hungry we give a bottle, but trying to only give five formula feeds in 24 hours. In between I'm expressing as much as I can by hand, though I've got a pump but haven't used it yet, so eventually we can give breastmilk by bottle.

Had a community midwife tell me yesterday that 'breast is best' but also 'don't get stressed of course!'

Going to some sort of breastfeeding support thing this afternoon to see if they can help.
