Advice on navel piercing in pregnancy?

Hi all, currently at the end of my 1st trimester with my first baby and trying to figure out what to do with my navel piercing which I've had for around 15 years and would like to keep.

I've ordered a flexible plastic pregnancy piercing to swap for my current metal one (see pic) but unsure of a couple of things:

  • if you swapped for a flexible one, when did you do it? I don't have a bump yet but I am tempted to change it sooner rather than later as I worry changing will cause some irritation (I haven't changed the current jewellery in around 10y!) which might be annoying when the skin is stretching already

  • what length of bar did you have on your pregnancy piercing jewellery? The one I ordered comes with a super long bar that can be cut down, and I am not sure how much room I will need to grow into for the next months

Thanks a lot in advance for any tips! I am also worried about it getting a bit irritated as the bump grows so let me know if you found any products useful (eg salt water) :-)

@irongiulia
Can't answer for you but where did u get your bar as I need one of them myself. But I would just put it in at the size it is you won't be wearing that long until u change back again.

I think I took mine out as I headed into the first trimester. I'd had it approximately 5 years at the time. It went back in fine after the birth, it hadn't closed up. It holes didn't get irritated at all by the bump

**third trimester

MayBeee · 29/06/2022 08:20

Could you take it out but put it in once or twice a month to keep the hole but not wear it ?

Piffle11 · 29/06/2022 08:23

I just took it out, didn't put anything in there, and popped the ring back in once I've had the baby. Went in easily.

Just take it out. I had two in my belly, one top and one bottom. Loved them. But times change and I haven't looked back after removing them. Pregnant with number 2 now .

Got this one online from piercingmania, they have a few different ones specific for navel piercings ^^

I managed to keep mine in for my first pregnancy and have this one so far. I don't know if it's because it's pierced on the bottom rather than top but I've never had an issue

20viona · 29/06/2022 23:49

I just kept the same one in no issues.

I took mine out about 3 weeks before baby was born and put it back in a few weeks after.

I took both my belly button piercings out around four years before I had my first DD seven years ago, and they've both opened up again this pregnancy as they did last time too, personally I'd just take it out and put it back in after the baby is born, then you don't have to worry about irritation

HobnobbingAboutHobnobs · 30/06/2022 06:37

I used a plastic one in both my pregnancies. Absolutely no irritation at all! A bonus was that it stopped my belly button popping out 😂 I didn't cut mine to size, just left it the length it came so there was plenty of room as I got bigger. I knew from previous experience that I close up really quickly, so leaving it out wasn't an option.

Ohdearohdearohdear6 · 30/06/2022 06:59

I had a clear plastic retainer. It wasn't massively long (it curved and was probably 2/3rds of the outside of a 2p.)

When I had BIG twins, I had to take it out completely. It looked like my skin might split. It was fine and went straight back in after with no probs.

Good luck!!

Amymamabear89 · 30/06/2022 07:00

I got one of the flexible ones- tbh cheap enough on ebay it wasn’t as big as yours and didn’t need cutting but I put it in when I started to show and it stayed there for a couple of weeks after too old ones back in now x

SuperlativeOxymoron · 30/06/2022 07:08

I swapped mine out for a longer plastic one when I started to show, so at around 24 weeks, but when I really popped at 30 weeks I found most of my pregnancy trousers sat on top of it and rubbed (it was more of a sensory irritation than anything) so I took it out and then when ds was a week or so old I put my metal bar back in.

Chanel05 · 30/06/2022 07:31

I just took mine out and that was it. Never went in again and now I'm pregnant with baby 2.

You might find that your bellybutton will stick out later on in pregnancy and will need to remove it anyway.
