Hi everyone I'm 13+5 I have a week sample at my booking in appointment at 8 weeks. I received a letter yesterday to say sample was contaminated and I need to send a new one in. Do I have anything to worry about?

This happened to me last time, I had covid so couldn't send a new sample in and the. I miscarried. So I'm just a bit anxious. Going to re do it today and get it sent off. Tia x

Perhaps they mean that the sample got contaminated while it was in their care?

are you collecting the urine mid stream?

Are you washing your hands before?

Does the collection bottle touch your genitals during obtaining the sample?

Are you careful not to touch the rim or inside of the collection bottle?

Are you collecting in a larger vessel and decanting into the urine pot?

are you keeping it in the fridge if you aren't immediately giving it to someone for testing?

Its nothing to worry about most likely - it just means they think the urine sample has been contaminated so they cant get a reliable result from it. The things above are all things you need to be aware of to try and avoid getting a contaminated sample.

Contamination can be anything, including if you have any discharge, which happens a lot anyway during pregnancy. It's usually nothing to worry about. I think they've said this to me around 3 times when I've given a sample but have said it's very common.
