Hey guys, I’m 20+3 and in the last few days I’ve noticed a really bad and really strong smell down there. I don’t have any bleeding or an increase in discharge but it’s worrying me as it hasn’t happened before in pregnancy. It smells so weird, and bad.. almost cheesy!! I don’t have cramps or anything like that, and baby’s movements seem to be getting a little stronger. Does anyone have any idea what this is?

It’s so bad that my underwear starts smelling 2-3 hours after changing! I’ve started using pantyliners now too because the smell is that bad.

Ring your midwife/ GP and get a swab done to check for an infection, we're more susceptible to them in pregnancy.

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 26/06/2022 16:01

Same OP, it’s just the increased amount of discharge - it gets more and more as you go on in the pregnancy! At one point I thought my waters were leaking my pants were getting that wet!

mine smells like a sweet cheesy smell - most odd as I’ve never had odour there before. Midwife assured me all is normal, but if you’re worried, you can take a pad with you and they can check it out (don’t worry, they’ve seen much worse before!)

It’s Sunday today so I’ll definitely call my midwife or GP tomorrow for a swab. Thanks guys!

Some bacterial infections can cause premature births so you need to get it checked out and get it treated if necessary. Talk to your midwife or GP tomorrow

dreamerkr · 26/06/2022 16:38

I’ve texted my midwife already, let’s hope she gets back to me soon

Okay so my midwife told me to ask my GP for a swab but GP don’t have an appointment available until next week. Wow

@dreamerkr
You can ask to pick a swab up do it yourself at home then bring it back to gp for collection I have done it before.

Could be Bacterial Vaginosis.

Could be Bacterial Vaginosis.

BV usually has a characteristic and unmistakeable foul fish smell. It’s also usually a watery/thin, greyish sort of discharge.

Sleepyquest · 27/06/2022 18:38

I swear I smelt like a biscuit factory down there

dreamerkr · 27/06/2022 18:47

@Babyghirl oh, I can? Thanks so much, I’ll call them again tomorrow morning and ask if I can do the swab myself then.
I’m probably just being stupid but I’m kinda scared about doing the swab too? It can’t harm the baby, can it? Ofc not as so many women get it done in pregnancy. Ignore me guys

It’s not a foul fish smell and I don’t have any discharge but I’m still scared of it being bacterial vaginosis as I read too much scary stuff online. Can it be another round of thrush? I had thrush a few weeks ago

I had what I thought was reoccurring thrush with my last baby. Just could not shift it. I ordered a Test online and found out I had strep b.
I would recommend to anyone with these symptoms to get tested for this.

So I managed to get an appointment and they did an internal examination (painful!!) which was all fine and the doctor couldn’t smell anything?

@dreamerkr did they do a swab ? Hopefully that will put your mind at rest. Sorry to be gross, I've noticed a smell down there but mines more sweaty (ew) and I think it's hormones ! I've started wearing cotton knickers more often and not using as much shower gel down there to see if it helps

dreamerkr · 29/06/2022 15:02

@thunderonlyhappenswhenits yes, they took a swab. Now I’m thinking it’s just hormones or increased sense of smell because both doctor and a midwife couldn’t smell anything. Weird!!

I had this in pregnancy, I think primarily due to enhanced sense of smell!

Hopefulrecovery · 29/06/2022 16:43

I definitely smelled stronger when I was pregnant and it was only me that could smell it. Think it was a mixture of sweat and extra discharge. My pants were always soaking, had to change multiple times a day. It continued after birth as well for a few weeks, as did the extra smelly armpits you get for baby to find the boob.
