Low folate first trimester

Hello,

Am new here and looking for some support and advice 🙂

I'm in my early 40's and around March time was feeling very sleepy all of the time, blood test showed low folate (2.something). I was prescribed 5mg folic acid which I took from 1st April. It's very strange as my diet is very good.

Forward to May and I have found out I am pregnant (unplanned). Although I completed the prescribed folic acid and since finishing that taken the normal 4mg folic acid, I am concerned that my folate was low during my first trimester.

By the date of my last period I am 8+3, but I suspect I am further than this and what I thought was a period at the end of April was not actually a period.

Very worried about spina bifida and wondered if anyone had experience of having low folate and being pregnant (in first trimester) and gone on to have a healthy baby.

Thank you.

@Selbbep
Go on to amazon and you can buy pure folate that's what I was taking.

Thank you ill look into that. I'm more concerned about what's already happened as I'm past the 8 week stage minimum.

Can you ask for another folate blood test?

I had a similar situation, I was feeling really tired and unwell so had a blood test and found I was low in folate. They prescribed 3 months worth of 5mg folic acid, and I found out I was pregnant about 8 weeks after. After finishing the prescribed course my GP asked me to go for another blood test and all levels were found to be fine. Have you not been asked to do a follow up blood test? If not I would ask for one, your levels may well be fine but it needs checking I would have thought

Also, I'm 20 weeks now and baby is doing great 😊

@Selbbep I don't quite understand, if you've been on high dose or normal dose folic acid since the beginning of April, then surely you've covered the first trimester.

How far along do you think you are? Because if it's more than 12 weeks then surely you've had a first scan or appointment?
