Can someone check my dates? Am I misunderstanding?

Missed miscarriage in March at 17 weeks
1 period since from the 6th-9th May
I’ve only had sex once since my miscarriage and that was on the 16th May
2 days ago I was ill with a sickness bug but wasn’t easing after 24 hours, did a test and was positive and showing 3+ on CB digital
My app worked it out as 7 weeks 2 days
EPU scanned yesterday and there was a baby with a heartbeat but only measuring 5 weeks 3 days

Its not possible right? Baby isn’t growing and I’m going to miscarry? The EPU kept saying my dates could be wrong. I had sex once. They can’t be

The other possibility is the scan is slightly off on length, and you are further along than measured.
5+3 is quiet early for a hb.

With DS1, due to previous history, I had a scan at 6+1, with no hb. 2 weeks later I was rescanned, and had a hb, but measured 6+5 . I questioned it, and they rescanned, and got much closer to the expected 8 weeks. He's just made me breakfast!

Have they asked you to go back, or is it a wait til 12 weeks now?

Just wait until 12 weeks but I’m already going out my mind. I can’t go through it again. I’m going to try and get them to see me again next week. She said everything looked fine and HB was present but just very early. It’s just because I know my dates aren’t wrong and there’s only possible day of conception it just doesn’t make sense

Was it an abdominal or transvaginal scan, op?

It's so hard to accurately size a foetus when it's this small, it's quite easy for them to date wrong. Even when they're bigger, just 1/4 of a mm makes a massive difference.

I wouldn't expect to see a hb until 6+ weeks so that part matches up with your dates

It was transvaginal so I think that leaves less room for error doesn’t it

You're talking about them measuring at best a grain of rice on a machine that shows a grainy image, measurements can be off and even 1mm can be a huge difference at these early days! I'm currently 28 weeks and even last week they wrongly measured my babies femur bone which is over 5cm in length so even larger bits of babies can be measured wrong, so imagine how hard it is at such early days!

Can you book a private scan? They usually take a bit more time checking things out than an early pregnancy unit, well in my experience anyway

You might have ovulated a few days after you had sex - sperm can be viable for up to about 5 days. As other posters have said, the measurements can be really off at this early stage too so those things together might account for the difference.

Your dates could be wrong. The day you had sex is not the only possible date of conception as you could have ovulated later and then sperm lives for a few days as others have mentioned. So there is possibility for a wider margin of error with dating etc. Plus as others have said, inaccuracies in scanning/measuring at this early stage. Transvaginal isn't necessarily more accurate when everything is so tiny at this stage.

I echo others - I would try to get a private early reassurance scan if you can.

I'd book a private scan, you'll drive yourself mad in the next weeks waiting until the 12week one

Thank you.. I can find ways of buying an extra few days to a week, but two just seems unlikely. I’ve got a very bad gut feeling.

I visited the EPU in a different hospital, the one where I had a miscarriage, I’m going to speak to my midwife from my local hospital and see if they’re willing to rescan. I’d rather be realistic that it’s probably another miscarriage and I just want to get it over with.

i had a similar situation with everything looking fine on the scan but measuring small for my dates, there was a heart beat too. I went mad trying to read old threads about it and basically yes, as I think you know it could be margin of error on the scan dates and everything could be fine: or it could be an indication that things aren’t as they should be and another mc. Only time will tell but in your position I couldn’t wait til 12 wks either and would get a private scan if EPU wouldn’t do it

I am going through the same thing. I ovulated around the 15th may, i have recurrent losses and previous ectopic so had a scan at 5/6 weeks looked ok, sac messuring 5+ weeks started in meds, wend back yesterday around be 7+ weeks, there is a yoke sac, a fetal pole and a heart beat but messuring more like 6/7 weeks 😩. Am back in a week, praying bean grows but my consultant said it can go either way

My midwife has said they won’t scan again until 12 weeks so looks like I’ll have to go for a private scan, there aren’t any within a good 2 hours of us which is a pain it’ll be a full day to drive to a city for one. I just want to know where I stand. I don’t have a good gut feeling, I don’t feel very pregnant today either

My consultant told me that shes seen babies 2 weeks behind at this stage and delivered them healthy at full term, but she has also seen miscarriages. Its a horrible waiting game, an not feeling positive at all either but there is some hope. I would be wanting a scan to check too.

Just checking in OP, I know how hard it is and the not feeling pregnant is almost like a coping mechanism.

I know it's a full day of back and forth but if a private scan will put your mind at risk it's worth it, surely?
