5th centile femur measurement

Just looking for some reassurance/guidance. We had a scan at the start of the week which showed baby's femur to be on the 5th centile, have done a bit of Googling and can see it could be a sign for a whole load of different things. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this on a scan before? As far as I'm aware this is the only measurement on the very small side & I'm also being seen by a fetal medicine consultant due to PMH so I know I'm in good hands, but just looking to see if others have first hand experiences to share? Going back in 4 weeks for a follow up. Thanks!

I am going through the same at the moment. Had my 20 week scan which showed short femur and was called back at 22 weeks for a further scan which showed it had grown but was still short. I have been referred to fetal medicine now and have an appointment on Tuesday. Can't offer any more info I'm afraid but just wanted to let you know you aren't alone!!

Hi @mylion can't offer experience I'm afraid, but here are several threads on this topic.

It's super common and most of the time just means your baby has little legs. It happened with my DD who's 1, she's fine just little legs.

If you think about 5 people you know I bet they all have different proportions.

@mycat22 ah thank you for reaching out, sorry you are in limbo too & hoping it just means our babies will have smaller legs & not much else. Good luck with your next scan, let me know how it goes!

@Flederjo that's so kind, thank you for those

@PutOnAHappyFace that's good to know, hoping it will be the same for our little one, it's just good to hear of others with experience of this sort of thing for a bit of reassurance

Fingers crossed for you. My Fetal Medicine doctor was convinced something was wrong because she was on the 3rd and everything else a lot bigger. You also have to remember that scan can be really inaccurate.

Good luck.

Hi Everyone,

I am also going through this currently. Had my 30 week growth scan and babies femur is 50.9mm.. <2.5.
I am so worried - all other measurements are OK and on the chart.
I am 5ft and dad is 6ft 1. I am just praying she has daddy's head and mummys legs!
Did anyone else experience measurements like above? The radiographer scared me.. he said it could potentially mean she could be born with dwarfism or downs. I had the testing for downs, and it came back 1 in 100000.

Any answers would be great! thank you x

I'm 22 weeks and my 20 week scan showed femur and humerus in the 3rd percentile and head in the 7th percentile.

Of course I was terrified and Googling everything.

FMU consultant said everything looked normal with the baby's anatomy and the placenta, so looked like just a small baby.

I've got another scan in a month but the consultant told me some babies are just small and as long as the placenta is functioning there's no problem.

Good luck x
