I've started bleeding. How worried should I be?

Hi all,
I'm 6 1/2 weeks pregnant.
I've had no bleeding until yesterday. I stood up working when I had a sudden cramp pain followed by a gush of blood. It was enough to soak into my trousers but just blood and no clots. I got showered and put a pad on. Since then I have had nothing on my pad but a bit of brown blood when I wipe after going to the loo.
I phoned my doctor and she has said it is best to wait and see how things go. She's going to phone me back on Monday and if I'm still bleeding she will book me in for a scan. She said I'll be 7 weeks then so they will be able to see more. As you can imagine waiting is driving me crazy. Has this happened to anyone else?
It might be worth adding that I was extremely stressed as my Grandad got rushed into hospital the night before and we didn't think he would pull through. Luckily he seems to be doing well now.

I had cramping and red blood at about 6 weeks. Not sure I had a "gush" but a decent amount. 15 weeks now and all seems to be going okay. I was convinced it was over after seeing the red blood but it wasn't. Hope all goes well for you! 😊

Thank you for your reply. Did they give you a scan and find out what had happened? I'm glad it went OK for you

@KatieJaneB yeah I had a scan at EPAU and saw the sac then went back 13 days later and saw foetal pole and heartbeat. They never gave me an explanation for the bleeding, was just one of those things. No hematomas or anything 🤷🏻‍♀️. I think the scan will give you answers and hopefully reassurance

Honestly please do not worry about this. Im 16w3d today, i had bleeding and spotting from about 4wks and it's only just stopped, ive just found out i'm having a very healthy boy. Had to call the EPU a few times who did reassure me that this was normal. I even had to have my cervix checked as i genuinely thought all was lost, but it wasn't! Just my mind playing tricks on me. Bleeding is normal unless it's accompanied with extreme abdominal pain and it's gushing and doesn't stop. Yours seems normal X

I’ve experienced both sides of this - first pregnancy it started as brown blood and light spotting at 6 weeks and progressed to a period like bleed with cramping - sadly this ended up being a miscarriage.

Second pregnancy, again at 6 weeks but it was different - I had a gush of bright red blood exactly like you describe - stood up and felt it and it soaked through my knickers. Then no more bleeding or pain. I genuinely thought it was all over but I had a scan a few days later and amazingly saw a tiny little bean with a heartbeat. I was put on progesterone and I’m now 24 weeks. Your experience sounds much more like my second pregnancy, so fingers crossed it’s a good outcome for you! 🤞🏻

Bleeding during pregnancy is not normal. It doesn't always spell disaster, but it's certainly not normal. Something will be causing it.

I had a bleed much like yours at 9 weeks. Thought it was all over. Had a scan that day at the EPU, baby wriggling around and all was fine.

Bleeding in the first trimester is common. The obstetrician calmly told me not to worry about the bleeding, the baby will be fine, even before I’d had the scan.

I had another bleed at 18 weeks. That was really scary as bleeding is taken much more seriously in the second and third trimesters. I was told to go straight to the hospital’s emergency maternity unit for a check up. Again, all was fine, my little boy was wriggling and totally unaware of the drama.

I know it's easier said than done but try not to worry.
I have been bleeding on and off since I was 9 weeks blood has been lots of different colours but there has been no clots.
I'm now 17 weeks and baby is growing well I still have the odd bit of bleeding. I've had 2 scans at the EPU.

Merryclaire · 16/06/2022 23:13

I had a heavy gush of blood after a run at 11 weeks. Thankfully everything was ok. Horrible thing was waiting over 48 hours for a scan, as it’s hard not to assume the worst.

However, as you can see from the PPs, it’s not uncommon. You have to have faith that the baby will be ok, until you know more.

Fingers crossed for you.

KatieJaneB · 20/06/2022 11:52

Thank you everyone.
All weekend I had bits of brown blood when I wiped but then last night I started bleeding bright red blood. It only lasted a couple of minutes and didn’t have any clots.
Ive spoken to the doctor this morning and I’m booked in for a scan tomorrow lunch time.
I know there’s nothing I can do but I really just want to know what is going on

@KatieJaneB fingers crossed for your scan. The waiting is horrible and very difficult

georgarina · 20/06/2022 13:18

I had this with DS but started pink, then progressed to red bleeding. It was a subchorionic haematoma

I also had an early mc where I was cramping and suddenly felt wetness and had started bleeding

So in my case it has gone both ways. I'm so sorry this is happening because of course it is so so worrying. I remember I fully thought I had lost DS because all of my pregnancy symptoms vanished at the same time. I was shocked when the scan showed a healthy baby.

Good luck and hoping for the best. Try and be easy on yourself today <3

Purplehonesty2 · 20/06/2022 13:25

Hope your scan goes well.

I had this a 9 weeks and thought I had lost dd as there was so much blood.

It was a tear in my uterus wall - can't remember the proper term now but they did say it might get worse and flush the foetus out. But she's 10 now so she hung on ok.

It's so worrying though. I'll hope for good news for you

KatieJaneB · 21/06/2022 19:43

I went for my scan today. We really believed it was bad news and the person doing scan seemed to take ages and didn’t show me the screen.
Then she said the words “there’s a little baby in there with a good heartbeat”!
I couldn’t believe it and she showed me the screen and I could see the little heart beating.
She checked everything and couldn’t see why the bleeding had happened. She measured the baby and it’s coming up at 7 weeks which is spot on what we thought.
It’s still early days but everything seems to be going OK 🤞

I had it , at about 7 weeks (prior to this at 6 weeks I had a private scan and they could see another sac (could have been a twin) but couldn’t see much as was so early.

went and had a scan at hospital the day after and all was fine …. Just a small bleed , no cramps tho.

now have a naughty but cute 3 year old boy

it’s bad they won’t have you in straight away really !

i hope it all goes ok , sending love 💕
