First midwife appointment

Hi everyone.

I have my first midwife appointment at 3.30pm today at 8 weeks. Myself and my husband are looking forward to getting the ball rolling, especially since we had a private scan Sunday just gone where we got to see our little bean 😍

Was wondering if anyone can let me know what we can expect from today's meeting? ❤️

Its not very exciting I’m afraid! They don’t listen to a heartbeat or anything, it’s basically a quite dull meeting asking you questions on things like family history, general health, last period date etc. They will take you aside and ask if you’re at risk from anyone at home fyi, they do it very discreetly. Otherwise bloods, blood pressure checks, weight taken.

All very routine and very odd that they don’t actually ask for any proof of a positive test or anything at this point! Things get a bit more exciting at the 12 week scan when you can see the baby and thereafter you’ll hear the heartbeat which is nice.

A lot of admin to be honest. You’ll go through yours, your partners and family’s medical history. They’ll take your height, weight, BP, ask you to do a urine sample, take some bloods and a carbon monoxide test.

It’s long and boring really.

As Shirley explained , it’s quite admin heavy. The midwife will ask you lots of questions, your general health but also about your family history and dhs. Things like ‘any family history of diabetes?’

You get your bloods taken and she will weigh you ( to check bmi)

It’s a good opportunity to ask any questions , so think about what you might want to ask them.

You also get a Bounty Pack , like a goodie bag with some pregnancy vitamins and other helpful information. Plus you will get your green book, which is all the notes the midwife just went through with you , there’s a section for your birthing plan etc, this is what you will take with you to every midwife/scan appointment. ( the colour of the book might have changed, but a couple years ago it was green!)
