you might have seen me on adjacent threads

but I am concerned and I want some advice as I have not a scooby doo in this area and am concerned as I am preg

please excuse me as I am bound to ramble

basically I know when my last period started it was Nov 29th so i am 6 weeks and I think 5 days preg in theory

I have been bleeding slightly on and off

had pos then neg then pos tests as of last week I only found out last wed as was not expecting to be pregnant.

I went to epu and they did scan on fri my levels were 417 on fri but on sun they were 791 (they had nearly doubled but not quite)

I was told my scan showed a nice thick womb lining but nothing else - no gestation sac or anything

I could just be early preg ie too early to see anything but this is inconsistent with my dates

I am concerned it might be ectopic as my first two pregs werent atall like this and I have got a sore back and loose stools today but no bleeding. I have an uncomfy tummy too and the odd left side pain but maybe I am reading into things and am overly worried.

can i ask what symptoms ectopic pregnancys bring

thanks

sorry rambling.

I have had ectopic pregancy.

symptoms.

Low HCG levels,
Pain that does not go away with pain killers.
Pain in the top of the shoulder.
Bleeding that looks like (prune Juice)
Pain on passing a stool or urinating.
A positive pregancy test, can be very weak +.
A feeling that something is not right.

Basically I would check this site

www.ectopic.org

If you get into severe pain or start to feel dizzy I would go to A+E or phone an ambulance.

Should and ectopic pregancy rupture it can be fatal, but as they are monitering your HCG they should have it under control.

Hi

I suffered an ectopic in October and thanks to mumsnet it saved my life. Sorry if i am rambling but i thiught i would give my honest advice.

I had a faint pos a couple of days after AF was due and in all fairness the test got stronger. I had a little brown bleed (well tbh i wouldn't even say a bleed) and went to the Hospital. They scanned me and took blood and on the scan saw nothing. They told me to call back later in the evening for my results. My results were 1250 and the nurse seemed happy enough as they don't expect to see anything until hcg reaches 1000+. 48 hours later i had repeat bloods and they had got to 2940. Obv i was thrilled and came on here to tell the ladies follwing my thread it was good news. One mumsnetter however made me aware that although my levels had doubled i wasn't out of danger... That evening I had the most horrific pain (sorry tmi - it felt that the only comfy position was to sit on the loo and bear down) I then got so bad DH called an ambulance. Anyway the following morning i started to bleed again (still not loads) and was scanned straight away. There was no baby in my womb but was clear to see it in my tube Unfortunately for me I was left for nine hours before surgery - at that point my fallopian tube had burst and i was 30 minutes from dying .

In my case the only symptoms were,

Late positive result.
Dull ache in my right side (the side of ectopic)
In the last 2 days i found it really hard to go to the toilet (both wee and the other )

I had no typical symptoms ie shoulder pain or neg tests, just goes to show....

Whew!!! Sorry for that long ramble...

I guess what i really wanted to say was

  1. Usually theu don't expect to see anything on a scan until your hcg reaches 1000+ - and as you are not quite there its not too much of a worry
  1. If you have another scan make sure they not only check your uterus, but also your tubes etc..

All your signs are positive imo but if you want to chat plz feel fee to ask any question.

pepperpots · 14/01/2008 20:27

And i would def agree with Beeper about that 'something doesn't feel right'

It's very hard to explain that to a GP/Nurse but please just trust your extincts

pepperpots · 14/01/2008 20:29

Btw when did you have your scan? When your levels were @ 417 or 791?

Aitch · 14/01/2008 20:36

nearly doubled is fine, in fact what they should be looking for is a doubling over 48-72 hours so by 72 you'd likely have been fine.
scans rely so much on the skill of the sonographer, imo and ime, as well as the type of scan and the quality of scanning equipment. by and large you would expect to see something with hcg levels of 1000, so it's not unreasonable for you not to have seen anything.
the womb lining is only relevant imo if you're having a miscarriage.
so at this stage there isn't anything to be overly concerned about, other than your instinct that something's not right. which is again, imo and ime, not something that should be dismissed.
what's the doc's plan of action? more hcgs? (one result is a bit useless, tbh). are they having you in for a scan soon?

Tutter · 14/01/2008 20:39

aitch right as ever

impossible to know anything for sure from what you've said there

many of us had atypical ep symptoms. e.g. i had red bleeding, not brown. hcg doubled nicely. no shoulder tip pain. pain equal across abdomen. despite ruptured tube i only described my pain as max 6 out of 10

a repeat scan - perhaps by a senior sonographer - is what i'd be gunning for

good luck x

soitlookslikeiampregthen · 14/01/2008 20:54

thank you ladies I do think I may feel that something is not right if i am honest i feel so bloated and achey in the back and have had both spotting red and brown and low hcg levels etc.... i will try to be assertive tomorrow and explain all and how i am feeling.

this is horrible but I am not impressed with the info i have been given so far and care at the epu so have lost abit of confidence at expecting them to keep me right which prob sounds pathetic

just a few things..... like i was told to go on sun am to the unit and when i arrived it was closed no one knew i was coming or why I was there and when I was phoned today briefly a midwife said my numbers to me (as if i would know what they meant then didnt want to clarify what they could mean when i asked she just said dont get your hopes up ) then said see you wed (even though it was sun my bloods were taken and I was told to go on tues then). I phoned back and I asked should I not come on Tues and she said oh yes you should actually. see you tues then

hope that doesnt sound bitchy

OracleInaCoracle · 14/01/2008 20:56

oh, im so for you!

you need another scan, from an experienced sonographer.

pepperpots · 14/01/2008 21:04

Don' take any rubbish from anyone, seriously i let them make me feel I was stupid and worrying about nothing If you don't feel 'right'go back

margoandjerry · 14/01/2008 21:06

it's horrid. I have been through this (no symptoms at all btw) and the phase of being in limbo was the worst. Make sure you get 48 hourly hcgs as that will give some sort of indication (mine were slowly rising but not doubling). I had about 7 that were indicative of something going wrong and it wasn't until the 7th that the drs decided something had to be done.

You have to make sure they are watching out for you properly and be prepared to push for attention.

After the 7th time the drs decided I should have an injection to prevent any further growth which could burst a tube (hcg was up at about 2000 so the sac should have been visible but it wasn't in the uterus so they had to assume it was in a tube though they couldn't see it) but luckily, my numbers started dropping the very next day so wherever in my tube it was, it was reabsorbed eventually and the tube was ok.

You also have to make sure your hcg is monitored all the way down to zero or a small risk remains. This can take weeks.

Hope this doesn't apply to you though and a sac appears in the right place.

soitlookslikeiampregthen · 14/01/2008 21:17

thank you

see what i mean you have given me more info flat in two secs reading that I am being told...this upsets me as I am meant to trust myself to their care and I dont feel I can really do that IYKWIM

I will try my damndest to be assertive tomorrow am though its just not my style

I cant tell you how much i am appreciating your advice / support I am going to write a wee note so I ask all the relevant questions etc

missjennipenni · 14/01/2008 21:35

I just want to add another perspective. I had a suspected ectopic, they scanned me and saw a mass in my tube, and no pregnancy in my womb, just a thickening. So i was sent up to the ward for emergency surgery. At one oint, they offered me an injection of chemo drugs, to get rid of teh baby & let my body expell it. but tbh, i just wanted it out! So i went and had a laparoscopy done, and they found it wasnt ectopic at all! It was just a cyst. So went back a week later, and there was the gestaional sac. Another week later, fetal pole, and finally the following week, a heartbeat.

Im now 24 weeks pregnant. I just wanted to pint it, it can sometimes be ok too.

soitlookslikeiampregthen · 14/01/2008 21:38

wow that is an amazing story! how preg were you when they scanned you and saw the mass in your tube?x

missjennipenni · 14/01/2008 21:43

soitlookslikeiampregthen · 14/01/2008 21:47

Hi all, TODAYS UPDATE

Had wee wipe of bleeding last night nothing to write home about though

Thanks again for all your support xx

The hosp have just rang and since sun , over the 2 day span, my levels have more than doubled they are 1603 today from 791 on sun am (blood tests today)

I was so relieved to hear from the lady at EPU / get the results

I have to go in tomorrow am and have a scan to see what is showing in my womb now

Am soooooooooo relieved the numbers didnt drop!!!

OP posts:
Aitch · 15/01/2008 16:26

cool, we'll keep everything crossed for you.

pepperpots · 15/01/2008 16:51

That does sound good and at those levels something should show on the scan. Let us know how you get on

HarrietTheSpy · 15/01/2008 18:35

Soitlookslike

PLEASE PLEASE insist they do a TRANSVAGINAL scan which will mean they can look at the tubes better. I have been there too, the first doctor thought my uturus "looked pregnant" but couldn't see anything. It is possible to see something in the womb as early as you are (not gauranteed but possible) as they could for me with this pregnancy. The stupid doctor who initially examined me when I had the ectopic didn't even bother to say (know? )that they'd get a better indication from a transvaginal scan. My hcg levels doubled too and I was told it was a normal pregnancy.

This is not to scare you, but I am repeatedly shocked by how underinformed or in some cases misinformed and rubbish medical staff are in dealing with suspected ectopics. You need to be as informed as possible going in to this.

HOpe things go well for you tomorrow - please do let us know how you get on.

XX

missjennipenni · 16/01/2008 11:49

Hopefully you get a good outcome like i did

wish you all the best xx

soitlookslikeiampregthen · 16/01/2008 13:43

hi all just to let you know

I have been for the scan

I got a denior sonographer and also it was a inside scan (transvaginal is it?)

I have had a couple more wee wipes of blood so when she wouldnt see anything for what felt like forever i was holding my breathe

Then she said she could see a minute minute sac

no foetal matter in it yet but a sac

so i have to go back in ten days on mon28th at 10.30 for a repeat scan!

Am very relieved!
