Internal scans

I am 5 weeks pregnant today (by NHS LMP dating) but in reality I know I'll be 5 weeks on Weds/Thurs by my dating.

I had an ectopic in November so had to call the EPU this time around to book a scan and they booked me in for this Thursday.

I am very anxious because of previous miscarriages and internal scans historically have always led to spotting.

I know on Thursday that they won't see a heartbeat because it's too early and this will raise my anxiety further, add to that some spotting and.. argh!

Are the internal scans completely harmless even if you get spotting after??

Internal scans won't cause a miscarriage, they might just irritate your cervix (although I've had several and had zero spotting after).
They'll just want to check that the sac is in the right place.

I had an internal scan at 8 weeks, it was uncomfortable but not painful and didn't cause any spotting or pains aftetwards, they do not carry any risk of miscarriage and are perfectly safe.

IVF pregnancies are typically confirmed with an internal scan at about 6 weeks - given the line of business they’re in, clinics wouldn’t do this routinely unless it was perfectly safe.

Thanks all, makes me feel a bit better. I had a fair few internal scans last year for the ectopic so I know how they feel so was just concerned about them irritating something and leading to loss. I have an ectropian (cervical erosion) which makes spotting afterwards an inevitability. I will speak to the consultant doing the scan about this on the day too, hopefully they can calm me a bit too.

My line progression on tests has been really positive this time so I will just have to keep everything crossed x

I had an internal scan at 7 weeks and had quite a lot of bleeding afterwards, I was convinced I was having a miscarriage. Baby still fine and I’m 25 weeks now. I’ve had another episodes of bleeding/spotting too and like you have been told that I have cervical ectropian. It wont cause a miscarriage. Hope it goes well x
