So I started on progesterone suppositories 400mg morning 400mg night, on Tuesday due to bleeding, bleeding has subsided now, thankfuly, but want I would like to know is can they make you feel super nauseous and can they mask a miscarriage. Havnt got another scan for 4 weeks, had a scan on Tuesday all was well even though I had 3 big bleeds, started the progesterone on the Tuesday but then had another big bleed on Wednesday so I'm worried that it is the progesterone that is causing the pregnancy symptoms and not the pregnancy itself.

SORRY FOR THE LONG POST AND THE MANY QUESTIONS.

Has anyone any experience at all, just to add I'm having some very bad cramping down low. Any advice/experiences would be greatly appreciated.

They can cause symptoms that are the same as the usual pregnancy ones, yes.

If a miscarriage is going to happen then it will happen, the start will possibly be slightly delayed by the progesterone. But completely mask it, no. And many women who have a miscarriage are surprised because they had so many "normal" pregnancy symptoms. Symptoms are unfortunately not reliable to assess pregnancy progress.

You don't say how many weeks you are.

If you're worried about bleeding and cramping put the pessaries up your bum instead as vaginally they can irritate the cervix and cause side effects of bleeding and cramping. I thought they were making me more nauseaus but I still very felt very ill after weaning off them.

Sorry just to add im 8+1, and have had 5 previous miscarriages. So i started bleeding last Sunday, gushes of bright red, then twice again on the Monday, and then dark brown( strong cramping/pains also) had a scan on the Tuesday all was well baby measuring right size, heartbeat strong, (had a scan also at 5+3), started the progesterone pessaries on the Tuesday twice daily, then on the Wednesday another massive gush of bright red, and again strong cramping, then brown and has now completely stopped which I'm assuming is down to the progesterone.
These first 12 weeks are so frightening,
Thankyou so much for your replys, I really do appreciate them. Suppose I just think if something has gone wrong i won't know till the 12 week scan, and the worry is just always there..

@Raindrops2015 can I ask how long you stayed on progesterone for.

@Mamastarz maybe you could see how things are for the next week or 2 weeks, and have a private scan before the 12 week one? Unless the EPU will see you before that (if that's where you were just scanned and who gave you the progesterone?)

I would find it so hard to wait 4 weeks too.

I used progesterone pessaries after early losses, but I started on them immediately after ovulation, to support the early pregnancy since that's when progesterone is so important 😕

Hi OP. I am currently in a really similar position. IVF so have been on progesterone from the start. Had a bleed at 5+2 and for a scan at 5+3 with my consultant and all fine and even a heartbeat. Have had 3 "bigger" bleeds with some cramping and lots of spotting in the 2.5 weeks since then. Hoping to see my consultant soon for another scan. I "feel" pregnant (this will be my 4th first trimester), but just don't know. currently 7+6 and crossing everything. I had bleeds in my previous (successful! I currently have a toddler asleep in my arms) IVF pregnancy with progesterone, which I was 100% convinced had failed.

Bumbers · 11/06/2022 14:00

Also - because of a previous loss at 24 weeks, I stayed on progesterone until pretty much the end with my last pregnancy, but I think it normally stops around 12 weeks when the placenta takes over

Mamastarz · 11/06/2022 14:16

@Flederjo Yes it was the EPU who scanned me both times, and them who prescribed the progesterone, can i ask how far into you're pregnancy you stayed on them for. Theres no way i could go another 4 weeks without knowing what's going on, they did say if i had any more bleeding/pain they would be happy to see me again. And the cramping/pain just doesn't stop.

@Bumbers im sorry you went though all the heartache too, and for your loss at 24 weeks, it makes pregnancy such a scary time.
Also that your going though this now too, i hope you manage another scan asap with your consultant, wishing you all the very best of luck, please let me know how things are progressing for you.
They have told me to stay on the progesterone until 16weeks.
The constant cramping/pain is so worrying, and i firmly believe that it is the progesterone that is currently stopping me from bleeding, as it also done this with the last early miscarriage I had and as soon as I stopped it, I was bleeding within 1-2 days.

I know I cant get the answer's i need from here, but talking to people who have been/or in a similar position does help.
So thankyou 💓

@Mamastarz so I started the progesterone at 2dpo and stayed on until I was 13 or 14 weeks I think. Technically you don't need it after that since the placenta then provides everything.
I think I tapered off it, cutting down to one pessary a day, then every other day, then stopped. But my gynaecologist said I could just stop cold turkey to be honest....I was just a bit wary of that!

If the EPU has said they'll see you again, and you're still having bleeding etc then I'd call them or show up there after the weekend.

Bumbers · 12/06/2022 20:42

Hello. Just to report back - I had my scan today, and all looks good - I am now 8 weeks. So - despite the fact I was convinced I was miscarrying multiple times (with bleeding and some cramping), it looks like all is OK (for now). Hope you get the same outcome.

Raindrops2015 · 13/06/2022 11:06

@Mamastarz i started reducing around 13 weeks and came off them all together at 16. How are things with you now?

Mamastarz · 14/06/2022 13:22

@Bumbers , That is wonderful news that everything is going good so far, so happy for you. Such a worrying time. Hope you are keeping well.

@Raindrops2015 and how did you feel reducing the progesterone, did you feel differently.

I'm for another scan this week to check that everything is still ok after having the bleed on Wednesday past and I've had some severe cramping from then too, which is worrying, but I will update once I've been for the scan.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.
