Small Bump = Late Baby???

This is probably a how long is a piece of string question, but I am currently 36 weeks pregnant, with a pretty small bump! Generally I'm not feeling very pregnant at all ... but in a good way. I'm still very mobile, still have lots of energy, etc. Not sure if family bears any relation but all my sister's babies have tended to be about two weeks early. For me though I somehow can't help thinking that the baby won't come until I FEEL more heavily pregnant and that might be weeks away! Did other people feel like this towards the end - and were your babies early or late?

nah, had enormous bump with ds and he was 13 days late. I reckon sometimes bump size is to do with how much water rather than baby size. Enjoy how well you feel, that's fab. Oh and how exciting that your baby really isn't long away (I'm 23 weeks pg and wish baby was imminent )

babylove21 · 14/01/2008 13:37

with my dd i had a relatively small neat bump - she was born at 36 weeks.

lisad123 · 14/01/2008 13:37

I had tiny bumps with but my girls, and tiny babies at 5lb and 5lb 3oz at term.
Both my girls were slightly early, 37 weeks and 38 weeks so hope that help

Had a small bump with first but that's because I am 6ft and there's more space for the baby to hide in. Was huge with second but that's because I ate so much.

mum2fred · 14/01/2008 13:39

i had a HUGE bump (i was repeatedly told at 6 months gone - 'oh! you must be ready to pop any time') and ds was 11 days late!

Notyummy · 14/01/2008 13:44

I had a small bump but am also tall so plenty of space for dc to spread out IYSWIM! I had to go to hospital at 35 for an extra scan because midwife was concerned the baby wasn't growing...the scan showed that the baby was actually larger than avaerage...and dd duly arrived (late) at 9lbs. Like you, I had bags of energy and was in the gym on the crosstrainer (only gently mind!) on my due date. You are one of the lucky ones...enjoy!

By the way, a lovely midwife told me one of the reasons that I might have had a small bump was that I had strong muscles from exercising and hence they were squeezing everything in. Whether it was true or not, I decided to believe her! When dd was born, she used to LOVE being really tightly swaddled, so maybe there is something in it!

Seems like bump size definitely isn't an indicator then! For those whose babies came early (ie before 40 weeks) were there any warning signs? I don't know what kind of thing I mean to be honest - I think I'm just getting desperate, I feel like I've been pregnant for nine years not nine months!

My bump with dd was small too, but she came a week early!

carmenelectra · 14/01/2008 13:49

I was small with both pregs, particularly last one, actually measured small for dates(but i wasnt). I too,was very comfy, never felt all cumbersome and was very mobile. I had both at 39 wks! Many people at the school were surprised when turned up with pram as they thought i had ages to go!

babylove21 · 14/01/2008 13:51

i had back ache from what i remember. was told possible water infection. 3 days later in labour ward.

lisad123 · 14/01/2008 13:55

The week before i was cleaning like mad but that was it. I woke up in full blown labour

sd24 · 06/12/2009 23:19

I am currently 37 weeks, and pretty small and mobile as well. Was told the baby is measuring average, and have gained 20 pounds in total (no idea where it is!) and i too am in disbelief that I will be having a baby soon - I thought I should feel more... fed up by now! I have only now just started having trouble sleeping, peeing lots, etc. I have only been offered a seat on the subway twice -- !

I'll let you know when she arrives. Good luck!

mistletoekisses · 07/12/2009 08:35

I had small bump with DS, he arrived at 37 weeks. 5lbs 1oz. Small but perfectly healthy.

Skegness · 07/12/2009 08:39

With my twin sons I had the most ginormous bump in the world ever. They were v late.

With my daughter I had quite a neat bump. She was v late.

Like the theory though!

PanicMode · 07/12/2009 10:21

I've measured at least 4-5 weeks behind with every pg so far (have had growth scans in the final weeks) and mine arrived on due date, due date minus one and due date plus one - they were all over 8lbs so no idea where they were hiding, although I'm tall.....so not sure what that answer does to your piece of string!

Crazycatlady · 07/12/2009 13:57

With DD I have a massive bump and was generally huge all over (mostly water). She was 14 days late.

Too early to tell yet with this PG.

blondiep14 · 07/12/2009 14:11

With DS I has massive bump. DS was 6 days late.
Bump even more huge this time, shall let you know if this one is late/early/on time!

pigleychez · 07/12/2009 16:43

I was massive with DD at 40 weeks. She was then 2 weeks late so I was even bigger!!

Jacksmama · 07/12/2009 16:49

I had a tiny bump with DS and he was almost a week early.

MumNWLondon · 07/12/2009 21:05

I was small with both pregnancies and both DC born within a couple of days of DD. My SIL was totally HUGE each time and had to be induced at 14 days late both times.

With DD my bump was so small at 34 weeks that had to have growth scan but she was fine and born 2 days late at 7lbs 5oz.

The muscle thing could be right, I have good stomach muscles and at 21 weeks on pregnancy number 3 although am looking a bit fat am not looking pregnant haven't told work yet. In my 2nd pregnancy with DS gym instructor in antenatal class said she'd never come across anyone in late pregnancy with such good stomach muscles!
