Brown discharge

Hi all,

I'm 6 & a half weeks pregnant. Early scan confirmed heart beat & looked good.

Saturday I had a small amount of brown, mucus discharge. Lasted on wiping for a couple of hours. Same first thing yesterday morning and this morning but goes after a couple of trips to the toilet, after which I wipe clean.

I've read it could be old blood, no other symptoms of miscarriage. Still feel nauseous.

Just wondered if it's worth calling the GP? There's nothing I can think they'd do but I'm not experienced in pregnancy, this is my first child.

Thank you from a very anxious FTM!

Hi!

I’m now 27 weeks pregnant and had spotting from when I found out until I was around 9 weeks, had two scans and EPU and everything was ok, I was told it’s just old blood leaving the body and as long as I had no period type pain/back ache that it was relatively normal. I would maybe call your EPU just to put your mind at rest x

Frida9 · 08/06/2022 20:05

Hi,

I'm in the same position. I'm 6+6 today and have been getting brown discharge yesterday and this evening, same time both evenings. I phoned my epu because I had a mc in March and was worried this was going the same way. No red blood yet which is how MC started so I'm still clinging to hope. Epu booked me in for a scan Saturday morning.
If you're at all worried phone your epu and they'll tell you what's best to do

Needingsomeguidance · 08/06/2022 20:11

Thank you so much both for replying, I'll call the GP in the morning.

The EPU doesn't take self referrals which is a little frustrating. Its an awful time of worry, hopefully an early scan will clarify things.

I had brown discharge around 6-7 weeks too, scan at my epu was fine and heartbeat found. Now 10 and half weeks no bleeding since x

Needingsomeguidance · 08/06/2022 20:21

Oh this is reassuring Jaaxe!

Sometimes I think why make the fuss but I wouldn't want to not know if something had happened.

Fingers crossed they refer me to EPU, their criteria seems quite strict!

I had quite a bit of pink discharge for a few days it was mucus like.
Phoned the midwife who apparently referred me to EPU but didn't actually refer me at all 🤦🏻‍♀️. Doesn't help our EPU is only open Mon-Fri 8-4 🙄,

So I went for a private scan as I had really bad lower back pain too for two weeks at that point.
Had my scan last week and touch wood all good. On the private scan I did find out I was having twins though 😁. 10 weeks today and have a DS. I bled with him at 11 weeks bright red blood and thankfully all fine too.

Bleeding is so much more common in early pregnancy than you think. Simple things like irritation of the cervix etc.

Needingsomeguidance · 08/06/2022 20:48

Oh congratulations!

It's reassuring to hear all of the good news stories. I think if they say they won't see me atleast I've tried. I hope it stops soon, the anxiety is huge!

And you're right @PinkButtercups I'd never really heard of spotting in pregnancy before.

If it persists and no referral I'll book myself in for a scan for peace of mind!

@Needingsomeguidance
Not writing this to panic you at all but I have have had 4 miscarriages and all of them started with brown blood no pain to go with it, I just wish people had of told me brown blood is not always just old blood but could be the start of a miscarriage and I could of prepared myself alot better, but after the first loss and after it started happening in there others I just knew.

Hope yous is just old blood and nothing to worry about.

unicornpower · 08/06/2022 20:53

I had brown blood from 4-8 weeks pregnant! Had some pink and even some red too and that pregnancy is now fast asleep upstairs in her cot. Was it an internal scan? Sometimes they can cause a bit of irritation! Your cervix becomes so sensitive in early pregnancy that almost anything can set it off. If you’re really worried then I’d contact your GP and ask to be referred to EPU ❤️

good luck! I hope you have a healthy pregnancy xx

Needingsomeguidance · 08/06/2022 21:06

@unicornpower did you call the GP for a scan or bloods when you saw the initial blood? Huge congratulations on your baby girl!

@Babyghirl I do understand it could be a sign of early miscarriage. I didn't know if the GP would want to know as I'm pretty sure there's not much they can do & would advise to call if symptoms worsen. Thanks to all on hear it sounds it is worth a phone call. So sorry for your loss & thank you for the heads up.

Hi OP, I had brown discharge at 6 weeks and again at 10 weeks both for several days at a time. This was over 20 years ago when they didn't do early scans and the GP and midwife weren't concerned unless I had pain or red bleeding. All was fine for me so I hope it is the same for you Xx.

unicornpower · 09/06/2022 07:14

@Needingsomeguidance I didn’t initially No as it was so early and like you we’d had an early scan at 6 weeks and heartbeat was there. I went into hospital at 7 weeks with hyperemisis so they scanned me there as the force of vomiting caused bleeding too. I would’ve called the doctor though had I not gone into hospital anyway. They’re usually pretty good with EPU referrals I think xx

cloudydays2 · 09/06/2022 09:17

I had brown blood from 5 weeks 6 days till just over 12 weeks, it was classed as old blood but also was told that during implantation a sac of blood can be formed and it either comes away or gets absorbed, unlucky for me it took over 6 weeks for it to fully go ! I am currently 24 weeks now !

Needingsomeguidance · 09/06/2022 09:42

Let's hope so!

Thank you all, in GP's now. He's asked for a sample to rule out a UTI & then will discuss with EPU but he's doubtful they'll see me with my symptoms.

I feel frustrated as I'd like my mind to be put at ease but I understand there's a threshold for services which I need to follow!

This happened to me at around 6 weeks, 9 weeks and 11 weeks. Every time I worried but I had scans scheduled the weeks of the second 2 times (for other reasons) and baby was fine every time. The lovely midwife who did my scans said no cause/unexplained spotting happens to 1 in 5 pregnant women! I'm 14+1 now.

If it's not enough to fill a panty liner and you've no pain then apparently it's usually nothing to worry about.

Try and stay nice and calm if you calm.

Looking for some guidance- I have had brown spotting (all different shades) for the last 11 days. Three days ago I did a test and it came back positive but I’m still having brown discharge. Yesterday this was accompanied with some red and today I now have flaky brown bits in my wee (picture accompanied. I also have back pain. Is this a chemical pregnancy? Has anyone had anything similar which has had a positive outcome?

Hey ! I had this and now how an almost 7 month old, I had commented up thread back when I was 24 weeks pregnant and I had the brown blood almost every single day of the first trimester!

Viviennemary · 13/04/2023 18:10

I got told brown discharge ok. If it turns bright red that is more serious.

redhead1991 · 14/04/2023 06:51

@cloudydays2 thank you for your reply! Did you have brown blood every time you went to the toilet? I had some red blood two days ago but it was very slight and mixed with red and hasn’t happened since. Just very nervous about it all and this is my first ever positive. When did your spotting start and finish?
