So my partner has decided for our holiday he needs a tan before he lets anyone see him half naked so he’s been using the sun beds. We went after a shopping trip today and I sat on the chairs in the shop chatting to the lady behind the counter. A heavily pregnant lady came out of one of the sunbed rooms all hot and flustered and said thanks and off she went! I was so shocked! I read that it’s dangerous for many means during pregnancy I know it’s dangerous anyways and I’d never use them but are sunbed shops allowed to let people on sun beds that they can clearly see are expecting??

The NHS website has all the relevant dos and don'ts. There is very little you actually have to avoid during pregnancy. And yes, you can dye your hair.

I think anyone using sunbeds is silly.

Hugasauras · 07/06/2022 16:08

(Using them for vanity purposes I should have said. I have a friend with a skin condition who does use them occasionally as it helps with that)

AmongstTheCosmos · 07/06/2022 16:09

I think the do's and don'ts should be given to everyone not pregnant.

Example: do leave pregnant women alone to live their lives. Don't forget that women aren't vessels. Etc.

Might save a lot of these sorts of threads tbh.

KingPot · 07/06/2022 16:11

I don't know the ins and out of whether it's more risky in pregnancy, but I was lucky enough to have amazing skin during my pregnancy and didn't use them. My psoriasis cleared up for the first time in my life.

I do occasionally use a sun bed when my psoriasis is extra bad. It's the only thing that gives me some relief. I say that after 45 plus years of it. Judge me if you want, but just posting to say we all take risks in life to one degree or another.

starlingdarling · 07/06/2022 16:12

I'd be concerned about the risk of melasma in addition to cancer but I'm place and freckle at the thought of the sun. I can't get myself worked up enough to judge her but maybe because my only pregnancy was in France where they are more laissez-faire.

AbsolutelyLoveIy · 07/06/2022 16:13

My doctor told me, in southern Spain, that if I got some direct sun on my bump it would really help my baby’s neurological development.

no idea how correct he was, so I assumed it was an old wives tale. (no internet to check)

cannot believe those cancer machines are still about tbh

Mental health benefits.

Kerrangutan · 07/06/2022 16:22

Sun beds should be banned for everyone

I have never and will never use a sunbed but WHAT is with this rising obsession of policing other adults lives?

If a grown adult wants to do something that causes no harm to others then why do people care?

I thought pregnant women had to take care not to overheat? Same with hot baths and jacuzzis etc?

Yeah this is what I'd think OP is referring to?

Although I have never used a sunbed so not sure how hot you get or how long you'd be in there for. Maybe it's short exposure so not a problem?

grapewines · 07/06/2022 16:28

Tinkletwat · 07/06/2022 15:37

So you want us all to judge this woman? I'm judging your husband just as much.

Yeah.

And "seen" tbh.

Ragwort · 07/06/2022 16:29

So judgmental- years ago I was in a jacuzzi with a pregnant friend and some bossy life guard type told her she shouldn't be in there .... same as making a comment to a pregnant woman who chooses to have an alcoholic drink.

Newpuppymummy · 07/06/2022 16:30

Agog at the people saying it’s the same as sitting in the sun.

Tgif5 · 07/06/2022 16:30

I use an occasional sunbed if I have a flare up of my skin condition.

rnsaslkih · 07/06/2022 16:31

You need to focus on your dp’s attitude - not some random he doesn’t know. Who does he think will be admiring his half naked body? Why is he risking cancer and wasting money on this vacuous shite?

AmaryIlis · 07/06/2022 16:44

You just saw, not you just seen.

You just saw, not you just seen.

Did that make you feel clever?

SummerHouse · 07/06/2022 17:00

I saw one in MacDonald's once. Outrageous. They really shouldn't have mirrors in there. 😂

A real life pregnant woman in McDonald's? Did she have the McNuggets? Or the quarter with cheese?

Why do these people keep allowing these irresponsible mothers in.

vipersnest1 · 07/06/2022 17:32

@PinkBump2022, given that you're pregnant yourself, I can't help but feel you are being very judgemental.Hmm

grapewines · 07/06/2022 17:36

Didn't get pile on you were after, OP?

You could argue, as you could with any kind of risky behaviour, that by increasing your risk of cancer elective ly that you are indirectly harming others by putting more pressure on healthcare systems.

Not sun beds but Dd had to message one of her friends who was pregnant and had posted on line about dying her hair.

Friend messaged back to say thank you for telling her as she had looked it up and she really didn’t realise it was something she shouldn’t be doing whilst pregnant.

I think there should be a list of dos and don’ts when pregnant that you get with your first appointment

Your DD was being a knob.

Simbaya · 07/06/2022 17:40

I've had bloods checked a few times over the past 2 years and my GP is always delighted to tell me that my VIT D is within the normal range. It's not one that I specifically ask to be checked but he appears surprised!

It's the equivalent of banning Africa! Far too much sun exposure!

I go on for about 5 minutes, three times a week.

I feel better. I look less deathly pale.

Kerrangutan · 07/06/2022 17:41

@tocas you could say the same about obesity etc but we're not bringing in govt mandated calorie controlled diets.

If adults being allowed to live freely doing no harm to others becomes such a problem for the healthcare service then we probably need to rethink the sustainability of the healthcare service. More banning, taxing (which results in banning - try finding drinks without sweeteners in these days), criminalisation etc isn't the answer imo.

Simbaya · 07/06/2022 17:42

Skinnermarink · 07/06/2022 17:37

Your DD was being a knob.

It's not included on the list as it's not deemed to be riskworthy.
Tuna. That's on the list.
Certain cheeses. They're on there.
Medications. They're on there.
X-rays. They're on there.

Anything else? FUCK OFF.
