So my partner has decided for our holiday he needs a tan before he lets anyone see him half naked so he’s been using the sun beds. We went after a shopping trip today and I sat on the chairs in the shop chatting to the lady behind the counter. A heavily pregnant lady came out of one of the sunbed rooms all hot and flustered and said thanks and off she went! I was so shocked! I read that it’s dangerous for many means during pregnancy I know it’s dangerous anyways and I’d never use them but are sunbed shops allowed to let people on sun beds that they can clearly see are expecting??

I can't believe sunbeds are still a thing full stop.

PurpleDaisies · 07/06/2022 15:35

You might want to look at what the nhs says:

www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/pregnancy/are-sunbeds-safe-to-use-during-pregnancy/

PurpleDaisies · 07/06/2022 15:35

Posted too soon

Sun beds should be banned for everyone but there are not special rules for pregnant women.

GinaDonatella · 07/06/2022 15:36

Firstly I think this is massively judgemental

there is actually no medical link between harm to baby and sun beds

I didn’t use them when I was pregnant and not actually used them since before 1st lockdown but I am sure the only issue is your skin is more sensitive?

surely it’s no worse than if she was a pregnant woman living in a sunny country enjoying a few hours of afternoon sun?

she could get dizzy and pass out but that’s the only issue I could imagine?

Tinkletwat · 07/06/2022 15:37

So you want us all to judge this woman? I'm judging your husband just as much.

motogirl · 07/06/2022 15:37

I didn't know that people still used them - only fake tan places here

MolliciousIntent · 07/06/2022 15:38

The risk is to the woman, not the baby, and so I think it's kinda fine? Stupid, but not immoral.

And the sunbed people aren't gonna give a shit, because sunbeds are harmful anyway and they don't give a shit about that.

doadeer · 07/06/2022 15:40

So many women get melasma in pregnancy - I would think it's a bit hyperpigmentation risk which is hard to shift.

Amichelle84 · 07/06/2022 15:44

Absolutely no difference in her using one and your husband...Hmm

This.

lickenchugget · 07/06/2022 15:49

Yabu to judge when you seem to think it’s fine for your husband… weird. They should be banned full stop.

Kennykenkencat · 07/06/2022 15:50

Not sun beds but Dd had to message one of her friends who was pregnant and had posted on line about dying her hair.

Friend messaged back to say thank you for telling her as she had looked it up and she really didn’t realise it was something she shouldn’t be doing whilst pregnant.

I think there should be a list of dos and don’ts when pregnant that you get with your first appointment

...hairdye is pregnancy safe and your husband massively overstepped.

skytoronto · 07/06/2022 15:52

I'm judging you for being judgemental

AverageJoan · 07/06/2022 15:55

This post is so judgement, what is the actual point of it? You're not the pregnant one in question and it doesn't affect your life in any way the choices this woman is making.

NetflixAndSauvignonBlanc · 07/06/2022 15:55

Assuming the pregnant woman was over 18 it's up to her to make her own decisions and not up to others to police her choices. I say this as a pasty pregnant woman who would never use a sun bed.

AmongstTheCosmos · 07/06/2022 15:59

Mind your own business.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 07/06/2022 16:01

Don’t worry, it won’t damage the baby’s skin. Your husband’s on the other hand definitely will be damaged.

Sodthatforagameofsoldiers · 07/06/2022 16:02

I thought pregnant women had to take care not to overheat? Same with hot baths and jacuzzis etc?

PurpleDaisies · 07/06/2022 16:02

Here is what the nhs says about hair dye in pregnancy.

www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/pregnancy/is-it-safe-to-use-hair-dye-when-i-am-pregnant-or-breastfeeding/

Porridgeislife · 07/06/2022 16:04

It’s much worse actually, there is no safe level of sun bed exposure. Using a sun bed makes you >80% more likely to develop melanoma. Australia banned them about eight years ago.

www.sunsmart.com.au/about-sunsmart/media-and-communications/media-releases/2012/media_release_20120913.html

Personally I judge anyone daft enough to use them, pregnant or not.

IncredibleSulk · 07/06/2022 16:04

How is it any of your business? It’s not like she was shooting up.

Some people use sunbeds to help with skin conditions, not that it even matters why she was using one. It’s her choice to make.

Hair dye is safe in pregnancy.

What dos and don't do you think are needed over and above the general advice about food, medications and alcohol that is usually given by midwives.

NumberCurtains · 07/06/2022 16:07

Ooooh, I hope you remembered your smelling salts 🙄

Stop using pregnancy as an excuse.to imfantilise grown women 🤮

playtest12 · 07/06/2022 16:07

There's no medical evidence suggesting that it causes harm to the baby whatsoever.

So yes, of course she's a muppet for using sun beds, but no more so than your husband.
