5 weeks 3 days, after ivf - bleeding and cramping/back pain

I’m not sure why I’m posting this really, I know there’s nothing I can do to change the outcome if this is a miscarriage but I could do with some support.

We’ve been trying to have a baby for nearly 9 years and I’ve had around 15 cycles of ivf (fresh cycles and medicated FETs), 11 embryos transferred in total and 2 previous miscarriages (1 MMC at 11 weeks in 2016, baby had trisomy 21, and a blighted ovum in 2020).

Had what is likely to be our final ever transfer with a euploid embryo last month and it was successful! I had a bit of spotting 3 days ago but wasn’t too worried as I know that can be normal. However, I started to get fairly intense backache the day after and cramps and then yesterday started bleeding. Dark red and fairly continuous, and the pain and cramping has continued.

I had a scan at EPU yesterday and they could see a gestational sac measuring about 6 weeks and potentially the start of a yolk sac but it wasn’t clear. So all of that is not inconsistent with my dates but the bleeding and the pain is extremely worrying, especially with my history. There was no sign of any clots in uterus so no obvious explanation for the bleeding. The feeling is very much like when I started bleeding following blighted ovum in 2020 so I’m fearing the worst.

Looking for some stories of hope. I just feel completely numb and can’t believe this is happening to us again. I thought getting pregnant with a euploid embryo would give us really good odds.

Perhaps you had twins & are losing one? It must be very hard to miscarry a really wanted baby. Not sure what to suggest other than to know people are thinking of you &. wishing you well

Reproductivelychallenged · 04/06/2022 10:39

Thank you for your message. I’m not sure about twins, I suppose it’s a possibility but I only had a single embryo transferred so less likely. It is very very hard, and exhausting!

Just wanted to update in case anyone is madly googling like I was and comes across this post. By some miracle, scan this morning showed yolk sac, foetal pole and the tiniest flickering heartbeat. Can’t believe it. It’s early days still but feels like a huge step forward.

That's fantastic news @Reproductivelychallenged , fingers and toes and everything crossed for a successful and healthy pregnancy 😊

twinsagain77 · 06/06/2022 19:27

Congratulations so glad to read your update, I hope everything goes well for you x

Beekindbeehumble · 06/06/2022 19:34

Congratulations! I bled a lot with our final ivf baby - apparently had an internal pool of blood ( it has a name I forget) that bled out.

hollyhd · 06/06/2022 19:55

Thank you @Reproductivelychallenged for your update, so good to hear! I'm exactly the same stage as you with an IVF pregnancy and had bleeding and clots since last night. My clinic says it's too early for a scan so I'm in limbo waiting at the moment. You've given me some hope!

Whyarewewaiting · 06/06/2022 20:04

Congratulations. Wishing you all the best

Pennox · 06/06/2022 20:08

yay!! really please to read this!

Verbena87 · 06/06/2022 20:10

Oh, wishing you all the best. Transferring our last embryo this month and I am feeling all kinds of fear/hope round it.

tonystarksrighthand · 06/06/2022 20:29

Oh my heart is with you. Thank goodness

whisk50 · 06/06/2022 20:54

I'm exactly the same! I've got a blood test at my IVF clinic tomorrow where they'll test HCG levels after we've been bleeding for a few days. Our tests still look really strong though so I'm so confused :(

Reproductivelychallenged · 06/06/2022 21:35

Thank you everyone for your lovely messages.

@whisk50 all the best for your blood test tomorrow. It’s such an anxious time.

@Verbena87 it’s so hard. I definitely felt much more pressure this time and it has taken more of a toll on my mental health for sure. Good luck for your transfer when it comes.

@hollyhd so glad I could give you some hope. It’s awful. If you have a local EPU they might see you (and their scanners are usually unbelievably good!). I’m 5+5 today. Being in limbo is horrible.

I’m having my clinic scan next week so I will update again.
