I'm Pregnant!

Hello everyone,

My husband and I have just found out I am pregnant with out first child. We are only 6 weeks along, so it is still very new. We are incredibly excited and are desperate to tell our friends and family, but we have our sensible heads on and will wait until we have our first scan ( no date for that yet but seeing the midwife soon).
I do have quite a few family functions coming up within the next few weeks and will need to think of some great excuses as to why I am not drinking. We are a very sociable couple and I am known to enjoy a wine or two, keeping mum will be challenging . I think I will go with the old ' i'm on antibiotics etc.' and hope people don't push me for an other answers. Does anyone have any hints or tips for avoiding or hiding the pregnancy before we are ready to announce?

I also work in a really small, specialized team so I am quite nervous about telling my boss. We already have a staff member going on maternity soon and my boss has expressed how this will have a huge impact on us and the service. I do feel guilt about letting the team down. However, I am delighted we are expecting and I am so happy to finally share our secret with all of you. Whilst it will be a few weeks until we see and tell our family, its wonderful to have our news out there via this platform...it make it all seem that bit more real.

Congratulations and wonderful news.

Regarding not drinking- I always pretended to drink, i.e. I accepted offered drinks and pretended to sip, or went to the bar and ordered something that looks alcoholic (soda water and sliced lemon) as a fake G&T, non alcoholic beer, etc. It works much better than giving excuses like 'I am on antibiotics' - to most that is a code sentence for 'I am pregnant' Grin

Wishing you all the best!

Oh yes..."I'm on antibiotics" = "I'm pregnant" 😂
Just pretend to drink, or be the designated driver that day

Congratulations, I'll be 6 weeks tomorrow so you're in good company.

I've never been a big drinker so can pass on drink without it being suspicious (unless I'm seeing my in-laws who think you need wine, port and cocktails with every dinner!) My tactic is usually "I'm driving" or " I've got to be up early tomorrow".

With work don't feel guilty at all, I started a new job last year and will have been there just over a year before I go on maternity but I'm not feeling bad. Everyone where I work has kids already except me and I'm expected to work all holidays to cover folk with kids (fine at Easter and stuff but I'm taking time off in the summer!) I think they kind of expect me to be having kids soon, especially my boss as I had a mc in March and told her why I needed time off.
Work will survive without you for a year, you can't put the rest of your life on hold because it inconveniences your boss😊

In my first 12 weeks of pregnancy I just avoided all social events 🤣 I wasn't feeling up to it anyway tbh, as like you I would always be one with a drink so i thought people would of easily guessed! Congrats on pregnancy 🌸

I usually drink vodka and coke so I would just get a small coke and let everyone believe it was one of my usual vodkas lol. Will you be getting a private scan? They do them from 6 weeks. Iv had a few this time around then announced at 8 weeks to my family

Thank you ladies for your advice and the congratulations. The day out with friends was yesterday and I just took the car. A few raised eyebrows but no ones asked any questions. My BF totally guessed, she asked me out right and I can't lie... but she had my corner and helped with the excuses.
In terms of the work thing, you are totally right. They hired a newly married young female, it won't come as that much of a shock. And work will continue without me as it had before I even joined the team.

I'm just heading into week 7. I have my booking appointment next weekend and depending on when I have a date for the scan, we might go get an 8 week one.
It all still feels so surreal. Other than several positive pregnancy tests and my boobs feeling massive, I have no other symptoms. I feel I need an official person to tell me its true 🙈

Good luck and congrats with all your pregnancies and journies. No doubt I will be back on here soon enough seeking help. :)

Saying you're on antibiotics is the equivalent of announcing "I AM TOTALLY PREGNANT". The bit people notice is you declining, so accept a drink and then just pretend to drink from it. Absolutely nobody notices that.
