Waiting and wondering if I have had a missed miscarriage?

Hi all,
First time one here :)
41 years old, pregnant for the fourth time. My baby journey started when I was 38, frst time around I had a stillbirth at 27 weeks (cord issue), followed by a mc at 9 weeks, then had a beautiful healthy baby girl at the ripe old age of 40. Am pregnant again but pretty sure am going to miscarry. My HCG levels didn’t quite double over a 72 hour period at 5 weeks (went from 872 to 1573), and I should be about to tick over to 7 weeks but Clear Blue digital is showing 2-3 weeks. Have had a very small amount of brown spotting intermittently and lower back and uterine discomfort. Haha the aches could be age related combined with wrangling a toddler 🤷🏻‍♀️! Have a scan with my OB this coming Tuesday so hope to get some answers. Anyone experienced anything similar? Hard being in limbo especially when you have had a pregnancy history like mine.

Hi OP, I think it's honestly just a case of waiting and time will tell 😕All those things you mentioned - HCG increase, slight spotting, CB digital (although I wouldn't rely at all on those bloody things) can mean either option, and vary from person to person.
Fingers crossed for you.

@Regenbogen22 hey lovely, I'm so so sorry for your losses. Let me quickly tell you my story and I hope it brings you some comfort, as I have spent the last month obsessing and googling and found no comfort!

I have had previous losses so I am already on edge this pregnancy!

So I know when I ovulated, so am sure of my dates, at 5 weeks I started with some spotting, some pink, but mostly brown, I went for a early scan at what I know was 6+2, they couldn't find baby, only a sac and dated me at 5+4.... this sent me into total panic as thats when I started bleeding, they ran bloods to try and bring me some comfort, however it did the opposite l!!! My bloods went from 22,100 to 23,443 in 48 hours! I was absolutely convinced I had had a MMC, the doctors were telling me it wasn't looking good, everything I read pointed to MMC, so I had another scan after an agonising week, at what would be 8 weeks..... and there was baby! Measuring bang on with a little heartbeat! I was absolutely certain I was going to have lost it.... I asked about the bloods they said any scan trumps any blood hcg, as it can vary so so much!

Also just to add on the pregnancy test thing, my lines were dark really dark, dye stealers! But then after I started spotting I tested again and the line was much much lighter! Again went down the Google rabbit hole, and read about the hook effect! The hook effect is where your hormones get to high basically and flood the test, so I added half water to the urine sample and tested again! And low and behold the darkest result I've ever had came back!

My advice would be book an early scan! They aren't too expensive and the relief it can bring you if worth it!

Sorry for the long post but I hope you find some comfort.... all I looked for was some answers this past month xxxx

Ocean80 · 29/05/2022 06:43

Aw thanks so much, really appreciate it. You are so right, it could go either way and I just have to wait it out.

I have also found the more I Google searching for hope the more I try to talk myself into being the exception and not the rule! It’s super head wrecking.

@Ocean80 I'd also say your bloods are perfect! When they get over 1200 they say they can take 96 hours to double! But look at mine! Didn't even come close!!!! I'm by no means out of the woods but just trying to take each day as it comes! For now, we are pregnant! And torturing ourselves won't change whatever outcome is headed our way x

Thanks for taking the time to share your story 🙏🏻 , and all the luck in the world with bub, what a ride you had in the beginning!

You are so right re: getting a scan, it’s the only way to properly know what’s going on. I am booked to see my OB this coming Tuesday (2 more sleeps) so will get scanned then as she is a specialist in scanning (handy!). The wait is totally agonising.

For us we are doing a lot of soul searching to work out if we are able to do this journey again to try have another baby if I miscarry. Would so love another bub, a loving sibling for our daughter, but the mental and physical load of a lot. Time will tell I guess …

Thanks again :)

So true!
that is absolutely the right mindset. One day at a time, one milestone at a time 🌻

@Ocean80 you will feel better after you scan Tuesday, I haven't got one now for two and a half weeks I'll be a wreck by then 😂

Ocean80 · 29/05/2022 07:09

@Moosh18 I hear you! I held my breath for 9 months before getting my daughter earth-side safely.

I will let you know how I go.

@Ocean80 good luck to you lovely xxx

Presently83 · 29/05/2022 10:21

@Ocean80 thinking of you and wishing you so much luck. Your HCG was at least very very high! They don't double normally once they get past a certain number.

I'm in a similar situ: slow rising HCG, early scan showed things measuring a week behind, now a fast heartbeat but small gestational sac... ugh. Have to wait another week for my next EPAU scan. Don't have a good feeling but all we can do is wait, I guess?

Had an MMC at 11wks back in October so am a bag of nerves.

Let us know how you get on xx

PoleFairy · 29/05/2022 12:30

Hi OP I'm playing a waiting game too at the moment. It's my first pregnancy after trying for a year, I'm 31. Friday I was having a lot of vaginal discharge so put down a thin panty liner. In the evening I wiped after a wee and there was pink watery blood on the tissue. I drove home and in the 20 min drive I seemed to leak watery dark red blood. Not loads but enough to be significant. I wiped a few times when I got home and then it seemed to stop. Yesterday and tody I've had a few drops of discharge tinted slightly light brown (guessing old blood still up there). Had no pain but not had any pregnancy symptoms at all anyway. I'm 5 + 4. Out of hours GP told me to wait until Monday and contact my GP for an early scan. He said its 50/50 whether it's a miscarriage or not at this stage. I feel like the pregnancy is no longer viable but I just haven't passed it yet. I feel sick with worry and can't eat, too scared to leave the house in case the miscarriage starts

Ocean80 · 29/05/2022 13:59

@Presently83 thanks so much! I will update as soon as I have had my scan for sure. These threads can be a bit of a lifeline if you know what I mean when you are in the trenches. Helps to feel less alone too and normalise just how much of a mind game pregnancy can be.

A strong heartbeat is encouraging, I have everything crossed for you. When you have lost previously it can be so tough to play the waiting game, I really hope you get a good corrective experience.

Please let us know how you go too. Xx

@PoleFairy massive hugs, no wonder you feel so stressed out. Deep breaths though and try not to loose hope just yet. It is so hard to know what is going on, as am sure you have read and the GP advised, the only way to really know is to get a scan.

Please keep us posted on how you go. Hang in there. Xx

@Ocean80 thanks. It's just so hard to have hope. The only symptoms id had so far had been frequent urination, light headache in the afternoon, being more hungry and just sort of overall feeling of knowing. Since Thursday these have all gone so I'm sure it's bad news. I did do a cheapy strip test last night and that was a dye stealer (and I'd only had an hour and a half urine hold and drank a can of coke in that time) so I felt a bit positive after that but then I know the HGC stays in your system ages.

Ocean80 · 31/05/2022 00:50

@PoleFairy I hear you and totally get it. Only time and a scan will tell. One thing I keep telling myself too is that if there is something wrong with bub it is so much better that I mc early. Keep us posted on how you go, again, hang on in there xx

@Presently83 just checking in on you. How are you travelling?

OP posts:
Ocean80 · 31/05/2022 00:58

No more sleeps, the torturous wait is finally almost over. Against all advice I have googled my situation and symptoms out the wazoo (why do we do this to ourselves 🤷🏻‍♀️)!!
Although have tried hard to prepare myself for the worst hope has crept in for sure. I am feeling very nervous 😬 for what comes next. Having already done pregnancy after a stillbirth the prospect of actually being pregnant is pretty terrifying, and if we have had a missed miscarriage not sure if this will signal the end of our reproductive journey as we are unsure if we will try again. It feels high stakes. But deep breathes, and just got to roll with it.
my heart goes out to all the beautiful brave mamas in a similar situation where things feel touch and go and you just have to wait and accept how much this whole baby gig is so out of your control.
Will post an update later.
Xx

@Ocean80 good luck today lovely, i totally understand how you must be feeling today, the day of our scan I was so scared I could of been sick! I sat in the waiting room and cried! Whilst people kept pressing their heartbeat bears!!!!! You'd think they'd have separate waiting rooms, for a while I took comfort in that scan! I believed everything would be okay! Now I fear the worst again :( I really hope you find some comfort today! Fleeting as it no doubt will be before the next thing sets us off!!!! Lots of love! Please update when you can xxx

Ocean80 · 31/05/2022 07:32

Thanks so much @Moosh18 🙏🏻

My Update as promised:

So I had the scan and there was very much a baby in there , good heartbeat 😮 - I have opted for review in a week to make sure there has been growth and there is still a heartbeat 💓 … I am so shocked I can hardly speak. Just goes to show how important it is to get scanned! So for now, I am pregnant and will try enjoy this moment and just go back to taking things a day at a time and a pregnancy milestone at a time.

That's great news @Ocean80 I'm so glad! I was in a lot of discomfort yesterday with cramps but had a Dr's appointment and she's booked me a scan at the EPU on Friday AM. A long wait and my husband can't come with me so I'm feeling very torn about it all

Moosh18 · 31/05/2022 07:46

@Ocean80 I'm so so so happy for you!!!!! Xxxx

Presently83 · 02/06/2022 21:03

@Ocean80 ah that's amazing! Really great news. So pleased for you and crossing everything 🤞

I'm on holiday and nothing has happened so far (which is great as I didn't want to end up in hospital on holiday again after last time) - but I don't feel positive about it at all. No symptoms apart from frequent peeing at night, but that never really stopped after the first miscarriage.

I have another scan at the hospital on Monday so we'll see. Right now I just want answers either way.

PoleFairy · 03/06/2022 12:55

Had my EPU Scan this morning and it was all OK! Totally shocked but measuring 5.5 - 6 weeks and there was a heartbeat! Stunned. They think the bleed was my cervix as there was no sign of a bleed inside the uterus, it must have come from outside due to hormonal changes. They said to expect it to happen again as my cervix is sensitive (when she pulled the wand out there was some blood on it). Very lucky

PoleFairy · 03/06/2022 12:56

Oh and @Presently83 i have had no symptoms whatsoever. If I was still a teenager who never bothered keeping track of their cycles I would absolutely no clue I was pregnant. One boob is a little tender near the armpit but I could put that down to excersise.

Moosh18 · 06/06/2022 11:26

I'm 10 weeks this week and still don't really have any symptoms! Apart from exhaustion! My sickness comes and goes I can feel so so sick some afternoons and then go days with nothing! Anyone else not got the sickness or any other symptoms? It's making me so so nervous for my scan next week! X
