2 negative and 1 positive test result - which is accurate?

Wondered if anyone can help. This is not for me, I'm 28 weeks pregnant! It's my lovely au pair. Boyfriend came over just before Christmas and she is 2 and a half weeks late. She did the 1st test last Friday I think, ie a week ago which was negative. Then another one on Wednesday which was also negative, so I thought she was OK with that. She let me know earlier this evening that she did another one today which was positive. I thought that if she had had 2 negatives being 2 and a half weeks late that the result would be pretty conclusive. I will arrange for her to see a doctor if she wishes to but I thought it was worth coming on here and seeing if anyone had any comments etc as I feel useless for her. She's 21, Italian and I think is absolutely terrified about how to tell her parents, and I don't really know how supportive her boyfriend will be.

I think it is highly unlikely, if not impossible, to get a fals positive.

you can get false -ves but not a false +ve sounds like the bfns were just too early.

Thank you emkana. Do you know why she would get 2 negatives before? I just thought that the length of time she's late would mean her hormone level would be high enough to be definite without having to test 3 times. I've been very lucky with my pregnancies and am rather ashamed at how ignorant I am ...

negs were presumably too early to have the right amount of HCG to get the test to show up properly. A more recent positive is likely to be 100% accurate.

Maybe she got her dates a bit wrong and she's not actually 2 and a half weeks late?

OracleInaCoracle · 12/01/2008 23:45

not necessarily. if she ov'd late then it might be too early but some women do get their bfps a bit later!

I would get a doctors test also, i know you gotta wait longer but at least u'll know, it could be that your HCG levels arent quite high enough yet, but a blood test would pick them up, no probs, and theres nothing to stop doing another DIY test while ur awaiting ur doc results

OK thanks guys. Clearly I need to talk to her tomorrow and get her an appointment with the doctor in the first instance. Obviously I have no idea about her periods - she's a great girl and the nicest ap we've had but boundaries are boundaries after all!! She's with friends tonight but texted me saying she needs to talk to me tomorrow so I'll see how she is then. It's just really nice to be able to give her information that's more accurate than me just guessing which clearly I have been. Whatever the result she needs honest and non-judgmental support. God I can remember being 21 and how I'd have felt in her shoes. I appreciate your comments.
