Recommendations for newborn alternative to moses basket?

Morning ladies,

I am 24 weeks with baby 2, our first son. Our daughter is 12 years old so quite some time since we have had a newborn.

When she was newborn I carted a moses basket up and down the stairs and she slept/relaxed in a moses basket in the living room during the day. This time we have decided on a next2me for night time sleeping upstairs, however, I am struggling with what the baby will sleep and relax in downstairs.

I have seen the Nuna Leaf recommended a fair amount, however, it is £250!! is it worth the money?

Would be interested to see what you thought was an absolute must for you from personal experience.

I bought a petite wooden cot from asda for downstairs, it was bigger than a Moses basket so lasted until they could into their cot upstairs for naps etc
I've been looking at the nuna leaf too - but wouldn't use it for naps really as it isn't flat but good to put baby down. You can get them for a good price 2nd hand, try Facebook marketplace x

My daughter slept downstairs during the day in the carrycot on her pram. We just carried her up to bed with us at night and put her in her bedside crib. Thankfully she was never bothered by the transition. I'm 27 weeks with a little boy and we will be doing the same for him.

I'm not a fan of moses baskets. They look pretty but babies grow out of them very quickly and having a toddler in the house with a baby in a moses basket on a stand isn't a good idea anyway in case it gets knocked over.

I used the carry cot part of the pram. It came off the base and clipped onto a stand. It was easy to tuck straps out the way and I bought special sheets that fit perfectly. I think it depends on the carry cot but ours was suitable for overnight sleeping so I felt it was fine for naps. It changed to a toddler seat later on as well.

Another one who uses the carrycot of the pram. As for the Nuna Leaf, speaking from experience, only get it if you have a large space to put it, and then never need to move it. I bought a second hand BabyBjorn for this one. Slightly cheaper when bought new, portable, folds flat, and takes up nowhere near as much room.

Yep, carrycot for the pram or we also had a sleepyhead which was really useful and not recommended for overnight sleeping but fine for supervised naps

I’m also interested in the answers to this. If I want to use the pram carry cot for daytime sleeping or do I need to buy a special stand or can it just be left on the pram or even put on a coffee table or the floor directly?

We live in a bungalow so that side was easy for us but I did use the travel cot with the newborn section for my second child as he was a bit big for the Moses basket. I used to use the carrycot part of the pram too

No need for a stand, just leave it on the pram. It gives you easy and quick access to your baby with no need to transfer if you decide to go out or move rooms on the same level. No need to put the carrycot on the floor - especially if you have a c-section as it'll be hard or impossible to bend down all the time to your baby.

Sleepyheads we're the best things for us.

We had a cot in our room then used the Tiny Love 3 in 1 Napper for the living room

The Lullaby Trust don't recommend the use of these so-called 'baby nests' or sleep positioners and actively campaign against the use of them. They should be banned. People argue that they are fine for supervised naps, but tragically even supervised babies can die in their sleep. It's not always due to suffocation.

Mine slept in the carrycot of the pram which I could push into the bedroom at night when they actually went to sleep not being held. But we mostly coslept

We used the pram carrycot for both DCs. DC2 slept better in it than DC1! (Who had a lot of naps on us or in the sleepyhead)

We had a next to me for upstairs and the Kinderkraft Baby Lovi 3in1 for downstairs.

I liked it as it was bigger than a Moses basket so lasted a lot longer but didn't take up too much room! It was about £65 when I bought it last year. It rocks as well which was great!
My Son was a really tall baby, above 99th centile for height and he lasted in it until 6 months when we started putting him in his cot to nap.
It folds down easily too so easy to store if you need it out the way or want to take it away somewhere to stay

We used the bassinet part of her pram

I got a tiny love rocker as it lies flat for newborns then can be transformed into a rocker when they’re older. I was half tempted by the chicco hug but it’s very expensive!

We were given a small wooden rocking crib for ds3. He loved it and would lie safely and happily in there watching ds2 and 1 playing during the day. I wish we had bought one sooner!

We've got a travel cot for the living room for our DS as a safe play space if I need the bathroom, and will be used for the baby for sleep when it arrives

@Squiff70 they are fine for daytime naps

If people choose to risk their baby's life for the sake of something 'looking good' then that's their choice. If a charity dedicated to offering safer sleep advice to parents in a bid to reduce the risk of SIDS ACTIVELY CAMPAIGNS against a certain product then... you know... maybe us parents should listen to that advice?

I used the Purflo sleep nest with my first - like a sleepyhead but certified safe for sleep. It has a mesh base and sides so they can't suffocate if for some reason they were to push their face against the sides. I used to use that downstairs or wherever I was, but it didn't have handles so if baby was asleep in it I couldn't move her around in it. I had intentions of using the pram carrycot but in reality it was so heavy and I had zero core strength so it didn't work to carry it around the house. This time around I'm getting a Moses basket - they're cheap, light and have handles!!! I'll still use my purflo nest upstairs etc too as it's great.

Why should they be banned?

I’m pretty sure that when I bought mine in 2018, Sleepyhead said that there hadn’t been a single case of SIDS linked to their use

Have there been a spate of deaths since then?

Used our pram for downstairs. Saves on space and money and maximum use out of the pram.

Also used our pram, but found that baby would only want to sleep on my during the day, so I got a wrap sling & put baby in that so I could get things done whilst baby slept
