Is this normal?
He just wants his 2 weeks paternity leave, I thought the matb1 was just for my employer, I've never heard of it being needed for paternity leave.

What personal info? All it has on is your name, DOB, address, NI number and due date
I’d photocopy it and use a big black marker pen to redact my name, DOB, NI number and due date. Staple it to a copy of the gov page that says they have no right to it.

That's why the SC3 form exists.

Fine, but I don’t think you should expect a company to give your husband/partner leave on no evidence. Given a man’s role in birth, the woman’s basic details is the only evidence available to apply for this.

That's why the SC3 form exists. That's all the information your partners employers should need.

It doesn’t matter what people think employers have the right to ask for.

what actually matters is what the law says they can ask for. (Which is the SC3 form)

I believe it's kind of "normal" practice these days,my husband was asked too, despite the fact he was in the company 10 years.
You wouldn't believe how many people "have" fake pregnancies and births. It happened for my employer. I'm not surprised they are asking for evidence.

The thing that depresses me about this thread is that so many people seem incapable of thinking beyond their own personal circumstances.

You might be perfectly happy handing over all of this personal information to employers that have no legal right to it but there could be countless different reasons why someone else might not want to. You handing it over could put others in a difficult situation in the future.

You're also protecting yourself. If there's some sort of security breach your details could be leaked too. Why hand it over if they don't need it.

I'm struggling to see why you have an issue sending them a copy? Am I missing something ?

The point is, it is not a requirement! It is a confidential document that belongs to a pregnant woman. So in terms of GDPR, it’s not something that an employer is legally entitled to hold if the woman isn’t their employee. There is a correct route to claiming paternity leave / paternity pay.

The 'evidence' is the SC3 form.

The form the man has to complete is all the evidence the employer needs. A MAT B1 only tells the man’s employer that he knows a woman that’s pregnant! It doesn’t prove it’s his baby.

Not only is it unlawful to ask for it (so it doesn’t matter whether it’s just “easier” to do so), there is no information on it that formally links the mother to the father. Nothing on the form confirms he is entitled to paternity leave. For those not bothered, would you be OK with being asked subsequently for a marriage certificate? Proof of cohabitation? Proof of ID or indeed proof of how the child was conceived if you have none of the above?! The employer is asking for information they do not require. YANBU OP.

A workplace has next of kin details for a specific purpose (often referred to as emergency contact details), that personal information should be kept securely for that purpose alone.
I don't care if others are happy sharing personal information, I'm not, and organisations shouldn't be asking for it.
