Hi mums,
first baby and first post here.
i am 35 weeks pregnant and my last scan at 34week+1d and DD was measuring at 3ib11oz. Has anyone got any positive stories of such a small baby :( I’m so nervous.
midwife has recommended induction at 37 weeks. Any experiences that you ladies are willing to share?
im so scared

Sorry to hear that you’re having a worrying time. At that weight and gestation it sounds like baby is measuring a couple of weeks behind the average? Is that right?

Why have they suggested an induction? Are they talking about fetal growth restriction?

I’m wondering this because growth scans can be very inaccurate and they are normally more concerned if a couple do scans show a drop in growth or if baby is very, very small (or large). If the growth scan is accurate and baby continued on a similar track they’d be about 5lb 5 ish at 37 weeks. That’s small but not really, really tiny. There’s every likelihood you’d be able to take baby home quite soon after at that weight.

What are your main worries?

My daughter was born at 2lb 5oz.
31 weeks. She's now 27, no health issues, first class degree, masters and a job in her chosen field.
Small babies are worrying, everyone can tell you all the possible pitfalls but they can thrive also.

The scans are not always totally accurate and 37 weeks is considered full term. I had placenta issues and a slow growth baby was taken out by emergency c section at 36+5 - she was actually bigger than the estimates of 4lb 7 a week before - she was 5lb 2. She didn't need any special care other than for jaundice so we stayed in for 4 days but she wasn't taken off to special care or anything. They had extra people and stuff on standby but luckily nothing extra was needed. Hopefully you will find your baby is bigger than expected and you will be home soon.

I was induced with my 3rd baby due to IUGR. He was born at 37 weeks and weighed 4lb 9oz. He was so so tiny but in perfect health. Just a very small baby

Hes 5 now and has no health issues and is normal sized compared to other boys in his class. He gained weight very quickly as soon as he was born. I remember being shocked at him being 17lb at 5 months old as my daughter was 17lb at 10 months old and was 7lb 1oz when she was born

My cousin delivered at 26 weeks and baby was just 1pound 7oz. Spent several months in NICU, Now a strapping 6 year old with no health problems at all. It is always a worry with such a small baby, but doctors are fantastic these days, and there are far more success stories than failures. Praying for a safe delivery and a healthy baby for you x
