Has anyone had covid or a virus in early pregnancy?

I’m 5 weeks and I’ve woken up with a cold virus. I’m yet to do a covid test but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Is this dangerous for the baby? Has anyone had a healthy child after being ill with a virus in the early weeks?

I had covid at 8 weeks, it made me super exhausted! But aside from that all was fine. I’d also only had one dose of vaccine. I’m now 33 weeks and baby is thriving 😊

That’s great to hear, thank you! I’m so glad you’re both well! ❤️

Were you worried at the time? I feel like these early weeks when organs are being formed are the most important so I’m really annoyed I’ve picked this up now of all times!

Just take it easy if you feel unwell, stay hydrated, keep taking your vitamins etc.

Alongside staying hydrated, take paracetamol if you have a temperature.

I had a virus with a high temperature, just before my positive test (so 4 weeks) then covid at 10 weeks. I was a bit worried, especially as I had similar to serve period back pains on day one of covid but back pain is one of the new symptoms, but everything is fine at the 12 week scan. I'm in my second trimester. Best of luck.

@Bramblecrumble21 thanks so much for sharing. Best of luck to you too!

My first trimester on DD2 was October to Christmas, and DD1 brought home dose after dose after dose. I'm asthmatic and was constantly coughing. Then at about 10 weeks we got flu or something (I would've guessed covid if it had been a few months later but this was Dec 2019), coughing til I threw up, a few days in bed with a high temp etc. And then that same week we all had noro. Horrendous.

DD2 is now nearly two, incredibly healthy, despite all the usual bugs from nursery I don't think she's needed to see the doctor once.

Just make sure to keep your temp down with paracetamol and I'm sure all will be fine.

@JenniferBarkley that’s fabulous (that she’s ok - not that you had such a terrible time of it) and incredibly reassuring. Thank you so much!

Got covid at 5 weeks. Felt absolutely rough and survived on a very potato based diet thanks to a combo of COVID and morning sickness but was assured that the variants in the country at the moment are quite subdued and no harm would come to baby. Now 20 weeks with an incredibly squirmy little boy who has a great heartbeat ❤️

You may well feel awful but it's incredibly unlikely your baby will be at risk. Just take care of yourself and rest up! X

It’s actually extremely common to have viruses during pregnancy. Your immune system ramps down during pregnancy so that your body doesn’t attack the fetus. I was probably moderately unwell for 4-5 out of 9 months with my first two DCs (who are now very healthy children!). I was only healthy with my third DC because of lockdowns. (That was an unexpected benefit of COVID!)

Try to keep fevers under control, but don’t worry about anything low-to-medium grade and definitely don’t worry about generally feeling under the weather.

Brilliant, this is all so reassuring, thank you so much!

I think the danger is mainly in the third trimester rather than early or second. I had covid at 17 weeks, unvaccinated and barely felt it! Main symptom was a runny nose and feeling more tired than usual (the latter only lasted a day, presumed it was just pregnancy tiredness before I tested!). Anyway we were both fine then and both fine now. Baby is now a healthy chunky 4 month old

@Herecomestreble1 Did you run a fever at all?

Herecomestreble1 · 18/07/2022 08:45

I didn't no, but DH who caught it shortly after me did.
