High NT at 12 week scan

Hi all,

Just looking for some support and more info really. Went for my 12 week scan today and absolutely everything seemed perfect with the baby, the nurse scanning had no concerns and said everything was as they would expect to see at this point. However, the fluid at back of baby's neck was measuring at 5.5mm when the cut off is 3.5mm. They didn't make out to be worried but did inform me that it could be a sign of downs or a heart issue. I got my bloods done (which should come back in 3-5 days) and also spoke to another midwife who said that it's just one of those things and it is normal to happen but to be aware there is possibility of a problem with baby.
Basically I'm looking for anyone else who has been in a similar situation? How did it go for you?
I'm hopeful but also extremely nervous and worried of the results, need some reassurance Smile

Hi there - I haven’t been through this issue specifically but have seen a number of other posts so might be worth looking back through the board? I believe the majority of cases come to nothing though, so fingers crossed this is the same for you.

Hi OP.
Sorry you're going through this worrying time. I had this experience at my 12 week scan with an NT measurement of 3.6.

like the PP said there are lots of posts on the antenatal testing board which will hopefully help.

Hopefully you'll find out your risk factor soon and can go from there if there is anything that needs further investigation.
I got the NIPT with mine but they might offer you NIPT or CVS if need be.

@Merryclaire @BrightOrion Thank you both so much for your replies. Have looked back through the antenatal testing board and you're right, most cases seem to come to nothing so feeling more hopeful. That combined with the fact everything else about baby was perfect and growing as it should be so there is hope. This is my first pregnancy after losing my last a couple years ago so my anxiety is at an all time high hoping this baby will be delivered healthy and happy. It's the waiting that is worst, but bloods should be back by the end of next week and we can go from there. Have spoke to a specialist midwife who said both NIPT and CVS will be available to me if the results come back high risk.
@BrightOrion how did you find the NIPT?

Hi! My son had an NT value of 6.4 at his 12 week scan and he is perfectly healthy sleeping in my arms. He is 5 months old and meeting all of his milestones. Hope you get good news xx

Mine was 3.8mm and I was led to believe it was almost certainly bad news. My nipt was low risk for downs so I didn’t have an amnio (twin pregnancy and the risk of miscarriage was double) but did have 3 fetal heart scans and an mri. DS is 2 and perfectly healthy.
