Umbilical Artery PI & Cephalic position

Anyone know anything about this? I had a growth scan at 32+1 yesterday and my daughter's Umbilical Artery PI is on the 95th centile.

Also, the sonographer told me baby was 'head up' but he's written 'cephalic' for the position in my notes, which I always thought meant 'head down'??

Typically, I only realised this stuff after I got out of the appointment, which was a little rushed tbh!

Hi there I literally had the same thing yesterday at 31+1 and was told the readings were above
95 percentile and to come back for a repeat. It's got me worried sick cos I'm really anxious anyway about this pregnancy. I found a few articles on here which said that sometimes the readings can be skewed if baby is moving around a lot so fingers crossed that's the case for both of us. When's your repeat? Pregnancy is so frightening :(

My sister just sent me this! I feel so much better hope it helps you too Bear

Hi @scrabbledabbl. I didn't have anything explained to me. I just noticed that it was on the Umbilical Artery PI was on the 95th centile and got curious, because anything too high or too low in pregnancy never seems like good news. I'm meant to be having my next scan at the routine time of 36 weeks. I do have an antenatal phone consultation on Monday - do you think I should contact my midwife and push for a scan sooner? What were you told?

Oh so they didn't alert you to it or mention anything? Maybe the readings were still within range because otherwise I'm sure they would have said something. I checked the figures on mine they were defo out of normal upper threshold limits. I wouldn't worry if they aren't worried though if I were you the fact they asked me to come back next week stressed me out cos close monitoring usually means something isn't right :( xx

scrabbledabbl · 14/05/2022 09:09

Oh also I think it needs to be above the 95th percentile to be an issue if yours is On then it's fine. Did it have this sign >95

deliwoman1 · 14/05/2022 09:29

@scrabbledabbl I'm so sorry you're stressed. Horrible isn't it?! Good luck with your repeat scan. At least you're being monitored closely, which is really good.

No mention at all and my reading was 1.28 (RI 0.74, EDF positive), right on the 95th centile. He wrote that 'umbilical artery demonstrated adequate EDF and the PI was normal,' which is why I haven't bothered the midwife yet, but something is bothering me about it. But how can it be normal if it's on 95th centile? Everything I read online said that was abnormal but obviously I'm not a clinician of any kind! What were your readings, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm not confident this hasn't been missed/overlooked because the scan was rushed, the sonographer was borderline unprofessional, and he managed to confuse me over the baby's position, telling me head-up while writing head down (or cephalic) in my notes. I think he might've meant head down, face-up (sunny side up) but I have no idea. So my faith is a bit shaken tbh. 😕

I'll speak to my midwife about it on Monday I think.

I mean I genuinely believe in better safe than sorry so question it if you need to! If you don't feel confident in their care or attention then definitely raise it.

My PI was 1.4 and my RI was 0.8. I'm no medic but from googling (which I know is awful) the average range is 1.18 PI and 0.7 RI so my PI is quite high :( I think yours is on the line ie on the 95th centile so that's why they didn't say anything but mine is above it.

I'm really hoping and praying it's just because little one was moving around too much but only time will tell it's the countdown until the next scan I have such scanxiety as they call it!

Does your LO move around a lot?

Samiiarm · 04/08/2022 18:19

@scrabbledabbl @deliwoman1 what was the outcome? I have had my 31+1 week scan today they have told me to go back next week for another scan to get it checked out again, I’m so worried I got PI 1.49 and RI 0.82
had it repeated 3 times and each time was over 95th centile

scrabbledabbl · 04/08/2022 20:47

@Samiiarm please don't worry they repeat it and it's fine it's just baby moves about and can distort readings that's allSmile

Abbs1993 · 25/07/2023 11:42

Hi hope you don’t mind me asking but what was the outcome of the ri and pi? If they can’t get below 95th. As in my notes the midwife stated my ri is above the 95th centile 0.74 and my pi is 1.32 just below 97th centile. So confused with what happens next do they book you in for early delivery etc?

scrabbledabbl · 25/07/2023 22:20

Hey @Abbs1993 did they book you in for a re check? That's what they did for me. I think they closely monitor you.

Abbs1993 · 26/07/2023 22:25

Yeah I got another scan tomorrow. What was your outcome of this? Sorry for the question, been panicking over it.

scrabbledabbl · 26/07/2023 23:05

The outcome was they retested and it was ok thankfully. Sometimes the baby is just positioned in a way that they can't get an accurate reading or is moving around a lot. But honestly that week I had to wait for the next scan to check drove me nuts so I know how you feel but I am confident it will be ok for you!

SRO14 · 25/01/2025 08:24

Hiya, just curious how everything went for you all in the end as I’m having the same issue now at 24 weeks.
