Was I right not to eat this steak? (Pic)

Went to restaurant tonight. Ordered steak well done as I am 30 weeks pregnant. Came like this after opening it up. Looked worse in person, the photos don't show it as pink as it was in the restaurant. I was nice enough and just asked at the end to have it taken off.

Was I right I'm not eating this? Waitress was very polite and agreed to take it off bill for us although didn't say much about how it was cooked....? DP said it looked 'ok' Confused

That’s definitely not well done. You did the right thing.

QforCucumber · 06/05/2022 22:14

I’d have just asked them to pop it back on the grill a little longer tbh, but then I eat mine rare and still did during pregnancy.

if you weren’t comfortable eating it then you did the right thing.

JulyDreams · 06/05/2022 22:15

Thanks both. @QforCucumber I was going to ask them to pop it back on the grill but was too nervous encase they don't something else to it .... (heard horror stories 🤦🏻‍♀️)

It first need to be well done, that just ruins your steak, it just needs to be fully seared. Waste of a steak but if you feel better than that’s fine.

superram · 06/05/2022 22:16

Just

It was a complete waste and I was ultimately pissed off because I really fancied it as well (but well done) 🤣

Why didn't you send it back and ask for a properly cooked one?! I can't imagine sitting there hungry Confused

I would have eaten it like that, personally, but I wasn't particularly assiduous about pregnancy rules. And eating well-done steak is like chawing on an old shoe.

Lazypuppy · 06/05/2022 22:20

You can eat real steak when pregnant, i would have eaten that. But you ordered it well done so you should have sent back to the kitchen

Blinkingbatshit · 06/05/2022 22:20

You really have to wonder how the human race survived previous generations😂….HOWEVER, if you felt it was underdone, which is your prerogative, you should have sent it back to be put under the grill again. Asking for it to be taken off the bill without having complained is ridiculous. .

Honestly agree I usually have my steak medium to well done with at least a bit of pink. This just looked very pink to me and usually since I've been pregnant I don't mind having it well done as a peppercorn sauce helps ...

The restaurant didn't even check to see if our meal was ok, by the time I had got the waitress's attention DP would have finished his 🤦🏻‍♀️ just didn't see a point. Rather my £25 back. Usually don't do that confrontation

You should have given them the chance to fix it by either cooking it a bit more or making a fresh steak. Waiting until the end and asking for them to remove an item they had no idea was a problem is actually really cheeky of you.

Why are you eating in a restaurant you have heard horror stories about through?

I agree usually I would laugh at this post too 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣 just annoying when you ask well done... oh well

This is exactly why I don't eat steak in restaurants anymore, so many different restaurants in different countries can't cook a medium well or a well done steak. Really annoying.

My husband cooks it perfect every time, steak is best at home being cooked for me.

Too many times I have asked for well done and the blood comes running out. Awful.

ObjectionHearsay · 06/05/2022 22:23

Wait was I not supposed to eat rare steak when pregnant 😳?

Confession: not only did I eat rare steak, I'd also get a weird compulsion to eat the beef mince raw when I was cooking spag bol, and I would often have a pinch or two before putting it in the pan 😳

If you weren't happy OP, it was fine for you to send it back. Don't worry.

Mrstumbletap · 06/05/2022 22:23

And no I wouldn't have eaten that either.

cheeseisthebest · 06/05/2022 22:23

A rare steak won't do you any harm when pregnant?

Sunnyshoeshine · 06/05/2022 22:24

As pp have said, i also wouldn't have eaten that when pregnant.

But as someone who has worked in a lot of restaurants, i think you should have complained straight away and given them the chance to correct the error. Lots of people don't know about the pregnancy food rules, so explaining why you weren't happy and requesting a new steak would have been better than asking for it to be removed from the bill.

Did any of the waiters not come over and ask if it was cooked to your liking during the meal?

JimmyShoo · 06/05/2022 22:25

It would have been fine to eat the steak pregnancy wise but it wasn’t what you asked for.

I would have given them the opportunity to put it right.

I was sat at my table not eating with a full on steak left on my plate ... any doting service would have noticed that or at least asked if I was ok... 😂🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

JulyDreams · 06/05/2022 22:26

Maybe I'm wrong then or misunderstood, midwife has told me meat needs to be fully cooked with no signs of pink??

No we had no one attend to us. Had to ask for service most of the meal. I sort of gave up.

When I say I heard 'horror stories' I meant of people sending their food back and having stuff 'done' to it in other places. Not this restaurant in particular, it's been great so far and it's a local to us hence why we wanted to go tonight

Maybe I've got confused. I thought meat had to be fully pink during pregnancy. Thanks

Urgh. You are one of those.

Yes they should have done a check back but missed it for whatever reason, but you should have told them rather then demand it be taken off your bill at the end. If a customer came to me like that there is not a chance I would take it off. Of a customer was unhappy with the cooking of their steak however I would ask chef to make a fresh meal and take the money off your bill. You sound immature and entitled here and it's not at all nice. Maybe just try basic communication?
