I have been prescribed this for a suspected uti. Test was negative but have had symptoms for a while so the Dr feels its best to treat me in case there is a missed uti, which can be dangerous untreated. Ceflexin seems safe in general, but have also seen a couple of studies were done that indicated birth defect risks with it if taken in early pregnancy. I am 15 weeks so not sure this counts as early pregnancy for a start, and also the studies weren't really too large etc. I am just so worried, but also worried about not treating it im just trying to do whats best. Anyone had it? If you Google any antibiotic or medicine you will always find somewhere that its not safe

It's fine

Bumps is the best website for checking meds in pregnancy.

Bumps is where I saw about the studies! Under the birth defects section... although most medicines say something similar along the lines a study was done that may indicate birth defects...so hard

I have taken cefalexin daily long term since I was 14 for recurrent UTIS - I take one daily and up to 3 if necessary. I am 41 now and continued taking it throughout both my pregnancies with no issues whatsoever.

Did you take it daily throughout pregnancy still? I'm guessing your kids are fine

There is nowhere that will say any medicine has 0 risk in pregnancy. I was on nitrofuritoin at 4 weeks for cystitis and I couldn't find anything saying it was 0 risk.
I'd rather risk an antibiotic than risk a possible uti getting worse in pregnancy.

Anxiousmamarggd · 06/05/2022 16:33

Yes I completely appreciate that. It's just a very hard decision. Knowing my test is negative as well and the Dr is going off symptoms alone.

I've taken this recently around 24 weeks for a uti, I didn't fancy the alternative of uti getting worse

If I remember rightly I took it twice with UTIs during my second pregnancy, and never gave it a second thought.

Yes - continued taking it throughout both pregnancies - one dc is 19 and one’s 10 and had no issues during the pregnancies or birth etc or with children at all. You are far more at risk of issues with an untreated UTI.

@Anxiousmamarggd tests for utis are unreliable and often do test negative even if there is an infection there. I'd go by symptoms. I took a round of antibiotics in my first pregnancy and my little boy is the picture of health. I've had to take antibiotics again this pregnancy for a uti. It sucks, I hate doing it but it's very important to get on top of an infection.
