10 week ultrasound - abdominal or transvaginal?

I’m due to go for my first scan with this pregnancy in a few days. I’ll be 10+4 days.

Its a private scan, and it said up to 11 weeks it is likely we will need to do a transvaginal scan?

My youngest is almost 5 years old now, so I can’t remember what week I had my first scan.

Has anyone had a scan around this stage, and was it abdominal or not?

Don’t know if I should drink a ton of water before my scan or not!

Hi @OuchLegoHurtsMyFeet I had transvaginal scans with my gynaecologist at 8 weeks, 11 weeks, and then during the more detailed scan at 12.5 weeks the doctor switched from abdominal to transvaginal because she wasn't getting the best images .

So I would say prepare yourself for that! I didn't have to drink a lot before any of them though.

I've had various scans across my pregnancies ranging from 6-12 weeks and all have been abdominal.

The private scan place I went to would start with abdominal and then only switch to transvaginal if they couldn't see enough. I was scanned at 8 weeks and they only did the abdominal scan. They ask you to come with a full bladder and then send you for a wee if they do go to transvaginal. So my advice would be drink the water!

But the spiel from the scans did say they might have to go transvaginal if they couldn't see clearly. But they've never had problems doing mine abdominally. I believe if you have high BMI it can be more tricky.

Thanks everyone. I’ll drink lots and see what they say when I arrive.

Personally I wouldn’t let anyone do a transvaginal unless there was a query ectopic. I’m not skinny and they could see from 7 weeks abdominally.

I've always had trans abdominal even from very early on! Xxx
