Cystoscopy whilst pregnant

After having bladder problems (even stemmed before pregnancy really) and after finding blood in urine after suspected UTI, 2 round of antibiotics, a horrible case of thrush, been a miserable 3 wks

Have been referred to urologist and have an appointment for a flexible cystoscope 😳😳😳sounds yuck! Have looked up it's safe in pregnancy so that's good but still feel apprehensive about the procedure

Hoping it doesn't hurt and they don't find anything nasty

Anyone else had one of these?

Xx

I had 2 OP for recurrent UTIs (over years). Had a general for both though so sadly can’t comment on the procedure. Recovery was fine though after the first wee - which is painful! They did it to widen my urethra. Second procedure was about 7 years ago and never had a problem since.

My husband had one earlier this year. It was all over very quickly. His doctor said the trick is to stay as relaxed as possible to avoid tensing muscles down there which makes it more painful. The procedure itself he said was unpleasant but not painful, but the first three or four toilet trips after that stung quite a bit. After that no problems though. Drink plenty afterwards to help avoid infection.

@Passanotherjaffacake @LittleRobins thank you both, I think it's because the fact I'm pregnant I'm dreading it - I'll be 30 wks by then and Although I've looked up it's safe in pregnancy still makes me shudder x

I had one during my last pregnancy. It was fine. Fairly quick really. Good luck!

@nowtygaffer ah good to know, did they numb the area or anything? And was it for the same reasons as mine if you don't mind me asking?
My bladder is so weak and it's so uncomfortable! X

I can't remember them numbing it. Mine was for blood in urine but no infection. As medical procedures go it definitely wasn't the worst I've had!

strawberrysummer19 · 02/05/2022 12:43

@nowtygaffer did they say what it might have been as I also have blood in urine
I've had hycosy, smears and been through 2 ivfs so I'm sure I'll be ok - just worried on results x

I had an op when my Ds was 4 months old to look at one of my kidneys. Basically they never found out what was causing the bleeding. It was 12 years ago and I've been fine ever since. Hope you are okay, it's a worrying time for you x

@nowtygaffer that's good - I'm hoping mine is much the same but I do have a really weak bladder so we shall see x

My wife is 23 wk pregnant & she has to undergo cystoscopy + TURBT. She went through this surgery 2 years back as well but this time during pregnancy. Is there any complication? Will there be any effect on pregnancy & foetus.
