Heavy bleeding but scan ok - any similar stories?

Hi all,

I have had a whirlwind of a pregnancy so far. I am currently 8 weeks and 5 days and my last check was Thursday gone by where I measured at 8 weeks and 2 days, which was slightly ahead of the 7 week scan prior.

I had been dealing with on and off spotting which was not fun but the scan confirmed all was ok so I relaxed. Then yesterday I just completely gushed blood. Bright red and very heavy bleeding. It was quite watery and I had one very large clot the size of my fist roughly.

like most of us would I am sure, I assumed this was the miscarriage and it was all over. A scan today showed a perfectly content baby measuring 8 weeks and 5 days.

I am relieved but also too traumatised to really feel happy or excited. I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience and what was the outcome. Good or bad id love to hear.

I haven’t had any bleeding since yesterday bar a small amount when I wiped this morning, but I am worried maybe the scan was too early and the miscarriage will still happen just not yet. The cervix was closed though which is a good sign.

Thanks to anyone who does share as I feel a bit demented trying to deal with it all. Doctors have been sympathetic and nice but basically all saying the same thing, nothing we can do but wait. I know it’s true but still struggle with how little can be done for pregnant women considering how advanced we are.

I had this on my last pregnancy, I spotted and bled on and off until 13 weeks. I was convinced after 'the gush' that I had miscarried but EPU scanned dme and found a happy and healthy baby. That baby is now a 17 month old who I adore and drive some up the wall in equal measures!

My scan showed I had some blood clots in my womb lining, below where the baby was - I can't remember what the medical term for it was. It was the most anxious weeks of my life, especially as I had previously miscarried but it was all fine in the end. Sending you love and hoping you have a similar story to share in a years time.

I had a sub chorionic haemorrhage with ds1, same as you with a huge gush of blood and clots and then a month of spotting.

It was classified as moderate to large on the scan, so I was warned that if it grew, there was a risk it could interrupt the development of the placenta or even cause it to detach (which would mean a miscarriage) but week by week, it shrank and was resolved by 20 weeks

I had extra scans because it can cause growth issues if it restricts the placenta, but ds was absolutely fine

I didn’t have it in subsequent pregnancies either…

if you search ‘sch’ or ‘sub chorionic’ on here, you’ll find plenty of threads with nearly all posts being positive outcomes

Thanks both for sharing,

I wish I knew what it was. She couldn’t find any evidence of the bleed but I do have 2 large fibroids. One being about 9cm and the other 15cm. I was shocked they were so large and I hadn’t noticed before pregnancy. I wonder if they maybe are blocking something or causing it.

The not knowing what it was and if it’s going to come back is killer. Just cannot wait for the next few weeks to be over! Thanks again for sharing.

Hi there - I completely empathise as had a heavy bleed following a run at 11 weeks. Was terrified I’d lost the baby and went to A&E, but at the scan (had to wait 2 days for that), everything looked well. Had light spotting for a couple of days after the initial bleed.
They couldn’t explain it - they said maybe a burst polyp but couldn’t see any reason on the scan.
Fingers crossed no bleeding since then (now 21 weeks).
I think it’s a lot more common than people realise.
Best of luck with the rest of the pregnancy.

Hi Op
I had this with my second pregnancy, I bled at 8 weeks for about a week, I also had an uncomfortable pregnancy with her.
But she was born perfectly healthy and is now 24 yrs old.

PennyPinkPineapple · 26/04/2022 07:58

I'm sorry you're going through this, it really is a horrible worry.

I had something similar and ended up in the EPU at 11 weeks. I'd been spotting for three weeks and then had a massive 'gush'. It was a weekend so there was no sonographer to scan me and the nurse I saw said it was highly likely I was miscarrying. However the following week I had a scan which confirmed everything was absolutely fine. It was a real head fuck!

I bled intermittently for the entire pregnancy for no known reason, it was just 'one of those things'. It was all fine in the end and she has just turned 1.

Good luck with it all and make sure you take it a bit easy. My bleeds coincided with doing too much and not resting enough FlowersFlowers

Hi op i am in the same position as you, I started bleeding Wednesday it was bright red but not that heavy in hindsight.
Because i was at work (i work in a hospital) i went straight up to a+e and eventually was seen and scanned, baby was fine happily sucking its thumb wiggling around but i have been spotting on and off since which is driving me up the wall. I had the same we dont know what it is but everything is ok and how it should be.

Im about 10/11 weeks i thought i was 9+5 at the time this happened but the doctor said i was more like 10 weeks. So i have no idea where i am 😂

Ohsoworried · 26/04/2022 08:20

Yes, I did numerous times throughout my whole pregnancy. It did result in some issues such as IUGR and very low birth weight but they never found the root cause and my little one is now a very tall three year old!

Kendodd · 26/04/2022 08:21

I had a lot of bleeding like that with my first. Terrifying but turned out ok for me. Baby is 16 now doing GCSEs . There was some speculation the bleeding may have been a twin.

DangerouslyBored · 26/04/2022 08:36

I had a sub chorionic haemorrhage at 9 weeks. The day I started to bleed, I also lost all my (terrible) nausea and sore boobs. I was convinced I’d miscarried.

I was seen by the (amazing) staff at my EPU and the obstetrician told me not to worry about the bleeding even before I’d been scanned. I guess they see it all the time, it’s very common to bleed in the first tri. Despite my utter conviction (and devastation) that I’d lost the baby, there he was, fast asleep, blissfully unaware of the drama that had been unfolding around him.

I’m now 14 weeks and have had no bleeding since, just a few weeks of dark blood, which was obviously residual from the main bleed.

At my 10 week scan (I have quite a few, IVF baby!) the ‘clot’ was still there but ‘nothing to worry about’ and at my 12 week scan, there was no evidence of it.

Try not to panic, I know easier said than done, but as said above, bleeding is v common in early pregnancy. All the best for a healthy pregnancy.

TTBAM91 · 26/04/2022 16:38

oh thank you so much for all the responses.

Its really putting me at ease. The bleeding has mostly stopped bar the odd dark blood when I wipe. Hopefully that’s the end of it. I was studying for my accountancy exams, working full time and running an Instagram page on the side so I’ve got signed off for 2 weeks and going to keep the feet up. Going into the Early Pregnancy Assessment hopefully this week or next for a deeper dive.

i had read so many people say they had a miscarriage that started like this, and even a scan that showed everything was fine but turned into a miscarriage within days so I’m praying that’s not my case.

Cervix was closed and babies size and heartrate was good so all I can do now is hope for the best and rest up! Full on relaxation mode has been activated.
Why is it when you have been told to do nothing but rest it’s the worst thing ever, but on a normal day you’d love nothing more than an excuse to lie on the couch all day!

Hi OP. I've had three DC and I bled at various points and to varying degrees during all three pregnancies. The first time it happened, it was taken very seriously (hospital admission for several nights, multiple scans). With my subsequent pregnancies, they scanned me but didn't admit me as an in-patient.

Bleeding in my third pregnancy was put down to a cervical polyp, but there was no obvious cause for the bleeding in my first and second pregnancy.

All three children arrived safely at full term, and were healthy and good weights. They haven't had any serious problems since.

Good luck!

Hi all,

just thought I’d provide an update incase anyones going through similar and looking for stories.

Since making this post I had ANOTHER very heavy bleed with clots. I woke up at about 4 in the morning to the bed soaked. This time I went straight to the emergency room where to be fair they were amazing. By some miracle again, baby was perfectly fine and although they could see the blood they still can’t say where it’s from.

They did provide me with progesterone which is great because it feels like somethings happening and I had a scan yesterday. 10 weeks and 3 days, so was measuring 2 days ahead which is great.

Really looking forward to getting to that 12 week point so I can tell a few people as I look very heavily pregnant at the moment due to two large fibroids. They’ve pushed my stomach out to where it would be at 20 weeks and I know everyone has noticed.

Hope this can provide some reassurance to anyone that might be going through the same that it’s not always bad news.

Still have my fingers crossed and candles lit for a healthy baby as it’s still such early days but I feel so much more positive after yesterdays scan. Every day I have brown spotting so I really hope that clears up too.

I had this too and it was never explained but I had to stay on bed rest for part of the pregnancy to control it. It was a very healthy pregnancy otherwise but I remember how worried I was. I do hope all goes well for you too OP

Brambleblues · 02/04/2023 10:04

Hi there, I was just wondering how things panned out going through a similar thing. X

Barelycopingmum · 02/04/2023 11:08

I had a huge bleed at 14weeks, I'll be having baby on Thursday.
Various scans and visits to EPU couldn't tell us the reason for the bleed (which in my opinion makes it worse as you have no idea of it's likely to happen again!)
Unfortunately I've ended up with quite severe anxiety throughout this pregnancy because of it but its definitely more reassuring once you can start to feel movements. Keeping everything crossed for you

Coffeemadness · 08/01/2025 23:19

@TTBAM91 hope you are doing well! how did everything go ? Did they find the root cause ?
I have the same symptoms now. Heavy bleeding with clots. Baby is fine but no idea what's the issue
