Bump measuring near 97th percentile

I’m not sure if I should be concerned or not. Midwife didn’t seem bothered and said it’s just an indicator that the baby is growing as she should be and said it didn’t mean the baby would be big. I asked if I had lots of amniotic fluid and she said it felt normal. Therefore surely it must mean baby is big lol.

My blood pressure and urine samples are normal. Midwife seems unconcerned.

However Google tells me that others in this situation get referred for growth scans!

Were you on/near 97th percentile in bump measurement and did that equal big baby?

My bump was the same but DD came out bang on 50th centile on her due date. She was in an awkward position for weeks with her bum sticking out at the top, so my bump was really big and tight. My bump with this pregnancy is much more average, but baby is in a different position so no big bottom sticking out!

Jfb23 · 22/04/2022 07:10

Bumb measurements are inaccurate. If it reassures you, my bump measured the 90th centile all the way through. My baby was born weighing below the 10th centile. I'm now being referred for growth scans in my new pregnancy because I had such a small baby.

I did think that those above the 10th centile get referred for growth scans, but it might be only those who move up centiles. But I honestly have no idea. How far along are you? Have you asked your midwife? If you haven't already maybe send her a text or mention it at your next appt if it's not too long away x

At my last midwife appt she said that my bump measured off the scale - as if I was 45 weeks pregnant. At 36 weeks. I was induced due to scans showing a huge baby, told baby would be 11lb at least at birth (I'm 5'2 and a size 8-10....) baby was 8lb.

Lot of faff over nothing!!

seasaltandsunscreen · 22/04/2022 07:12

(Wasn't induced at 36 weeks although it reads like that!!)

CurryandSnuggle · 22/04/2022 07:17

@Hugasauras ah maybe that could be it, my bump feels really firm near my belly button which is where her bum is and she often sticks it out lol. Thanks xx

@Jfb23 thanks for the reassurance 🙂I’m 34 weeks, next appointment is in 2 weeks, I will ask then I think 🙂good luck with your growth scan

@seasaltandsunscreen oh blimey!! That sounds frustrating! I do think being petite makes a difference, I looked really big with my DS as well (though I don’t know what my fundal measurements were) and I’m 4’11 and size 10.

I wouldn't worry about it. Some people just have big bumps. One of my colleagues was the same and her baby came out smaller. My dc were 91st percentile at birth but were born fine, no pain relief, no complications. Don't worry!

WashableVelvet · 22/04/2022 07:36

Mine was off the top of the scale throughout. Baby born full term, 7.5lbs. MW said short women like me it’s often like that.

ijustcouldntthinkofausername · 22/04/2022 07:45

My bump always measured above 91st centile. I asked MW if he was going to be big and she wasn't concerned just said he's looking around 8lbs

He was a teeny tiny 6lb9oz

So I think I had just got fat and had taken advantage of being pregnant and over eating possibly 🤣

TheSleeperandTheSpindle · 22/04/2022 07:45

Both my bumps were off the scale too and sent for growth scans etc. DS1 was 7lb 7oz and DS2 7lb 13oz.

I do think being short/petite makes a difference. I'm 5 feet tall and size 8, I don't think the bumps had anywhere else to go but out! 😆

ijustcouldntthinkofausername · 22/04/2022 07:45

I am also 5ft and I was a size 10 similar frame to you OP

Abetes · 22/04/2022 07:50

Measurements on the day before my baby was born suggested that he was on the 50th percentile. He was in fact on the 95th percentile. So experience is that they really don’t know.

Hey OP. Try not to worry. I’ve a massive bump but there are concerns about my baby’s size according to the ultrasound measurements. To the point where I’m being induced early. So in my experience too, take bump measurements with a pinch of salt. It does sound like they’ll be a good weight though and certainly not small, just maybe not as big as your bump suggests. But do ask about growth scans even to just put your mind at rest. I have them due to a medical condition. It’s hard to think I wouldn’t have had a scan since 20 weeks (normal scan - no size concerns) if I didn’t have the medical condition, as my big bump would not have flagged any concerns.

Thirdtrimester · 05/06/2023 13:03

I didn’t clarify that my baby is actually too small despite my huge bump! Btw I had a bmi of about 20 at the start of pregnancy. I was only 53kg if it helps. I didn’t have a large belly to start with.
