Contaminated urine sample

So at my booking in appointment they got me to do a urine sample, a few days later I got a letter to say the sample is contaminated and needs retesting, it may require antibiotics, ok not a problem I think

a week ago ish I did the second urine sample and today get a letter to say the exact same thing and to come in and do a urine sample

back in august last year I had a missed miscarriage and I had the same thing then but that didn’t come up until the day I had my second scan and confirmed the miscarriage. I don’t want to do another urine sample to receive the same letter for the third time, I have my 12w scan on Thursday anyway at the hospital, so I may aswel just do it there and then. Especially if it’s gonna come back my pregnancy isn’t viable like last time. Does anyone have any advice for how to go about this whole thing? Anyone had any experience of the same thing or similar?

I'm sorry for your loss, its most likely getting contaminated in the cardboard tub.

Make sure you get a good mid stream sample. So get the container ready, start weeing but don't collect the wee straight away, wait till some has passed then collect he middle part of the sample. That will flush out and bacteria in your urethra thats lurking there, but not causing an infection.

Good luck at your 12w scan

you could also have a mild infection and it be the cause of the miscarriages so i suggest doing as many samples as necessary to rule that out.

how are you collecting your samples?

Done this the last two times, and they keep coming back the same but aren’t offering me any solution to it just take another, so I’m having to drive all the way to the hospital (around 30 mins away) for a wee and then back again it’s driving me crackers

Also to add on to it, I’ve taken both samples at the hospital and didn’t use a cardboard thing it came with like a yellow shee wee type funnel you attach to it directly which comes in sterile packaging and I washed my hands before AND used a mid stream sample so I’m completely puzzled

if indeed it is done accurately then you should follow up as if it is not contaminated and instead an infection (you don't need to show signs of UTI to have a UTI). the next step would be a specimen collected with a catheter using sterile technique.

I had this almost every week in my pregnancy, they kept sending it off to the lab and it kept coming back as 'mixed growth', nothing ever came of it, the only explanation they could offer is that the sample was catching discharge on its way out.

My sample from my booking appointment came back as contaminated and that I needed a re-test. Second sample was fine.

The doctor and midwife said what sometimes happens is bacteria from skin can contaminate it and it grows an unusual culture that wouldn't normally be present in a urine infection.
