Collagen supplement in Pregnancy

Anyone else taking these or had medical advice for or against or done any decent research into this?

I've been taking marine collagen supplements (somewhat erratically) for the first 13 weeks and have just read something that mentioned possible mercury levels being an issue.

I might switch over to Bovine collagen as there isn't the mercury risk there, but ironically it was the non marine multi collagen pills that said not safe suring pregnancy whereas the marine said they suggested you speak to a health professional if pregnant. Midwife hadn't a clue when I asked at 8 weeks, 4+ week wait for a GP appointment at our maxxed out local surgery and not sure if they'd appreciate me taking up an entire slot for this.

PS not expecting any here, but if so please save yourself any blanket "why would you even risk it?" pregnancy guilt trip replies, I drive a car, will fly abroad later this year, rush up and down flights of stairs and do many other things that when taken to logical extreme can seem risky everyday.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @bloodynewusernameagain I've never heard of benefits of taking collagen in pregnancy! I can't see how it could harm anything though!
Omega 3 is now advised, such that it's included with pregnancy vitamin supplements here.

Thanks @Regenbogen22 I think there are benefits to the mother - i.e. joint care, stretch marks, hair and skin, etc etc. I'm old so perhaps this perspective is more important to me than younger women.

Yep, I'm dutifully chugging back the Omega 3/Iodine etc too after I read about it from the RCOG - disappointed the NHS only focused on the Folic tbh or I would have started these much earlier!

I had collagen powder right up until I fell pregnant, made a noticeable difference to my hair and skin, I stopped it and haven't got round to ordering a bovine only one. I was told that Marine collagen wasn't recommended in pregnancy, so have avoided.

I was taking the vital bovine collagen powder regularly before getting pregnant as was trying to up protein intake because I heard it was good for egg quality and we did ivf. I still add the odd spoonful to tea and porridge now, just because I don't tend to consume that much protein normally and thought it might be good to top up - I did Google whether it was save in pregnancy before continuing to take it and couldn't find anything suggesting it wasn't
