20 week scan, no view of kidneys or spine

Hello mumsnetters,

Just went for the 20 week scan all OK except that sonogropher said baby was on its back so she couldn't get a look at kidneys or spine. They couldn't see kidneys on the 12 week scan either, but I know that's not an essential at that stage so wasn't worried. They could see a spine at 12 weeks, looking OK.

So my main concern is that there is no sight of kidneys. Ho common is it to need a rescan because of the baby's position?

I realise I will just have to wait until the next scan (tomorrow) and find out but umm... Share scan experiences please! All are welcome. X

It could be just 'one of those things', or it could be something more. But you will cross that bridge when you get to it. No use wracking your brains out worrying now. I personally have not had to go back for a further scan due to not seeing anything clearly, but I've only had two babies.

How were the amniotic fluid levels?

Merryclaire · 20/04/2022 18:36

Apparently 15% of scans need to be redone because they can’t see everything due to baby’s position. It’s very common and doesn’t usually mean anything is wrong.
I had my 20 week scan today and it took ages for her to be able to look at the heart - she had to come back to it later on as LO wouldn’t stop moving around.

Interesting stat! Thanks for sharing :) Yes they spent a really long time trying to get everything at the 12 week and again today. It's amazing watching the sonographer at work. I am glad I don't have to wait long until the next scan.

Wouldn't worry too much about this, sometimes they move about so much it makes it difficult. At my anomaly scan they couldn't see a couple of things clearly so they were rechecked at a later date. Hope all goes well for you tomorrow

They were normal, and she did comment on fluid in the fetus which is positive. Thanks for the q, I had overlooked that.

Thank you! It's appreciated. I won't lie around scouring the internet, it's good to connect with you all about different experiences though.

Hi @LaddieCthulu how did the repeat scan go yesterday? I hope the baby was cooperative this time! 😀

LaddieCthulu · 22/04/2022 08:43

Hey @Regenbogen22 , Yes, baby required a lot of shaking around but, showed us everything and all looks well :) Thanks for asking! I had a large celebratory cookie and bought a pushchair :)

Great news! What push chair did you buy? We are in the research phase!

At my 20 week scan they couldn't get a clear picture of my Sons brain, they tried to move him and nothing worked. got sent home and had a follow up with a consultant (at the hospital i was under if you need a rescan, it has to be done by consultant so if you do get a consultant appointment try not to panic it's just protocol) he was absolutely fine all checked out and he's now a healthy happy 16 month old xx

JudgementalCentipede · 22/04/2022 09:08

I had to go back to have my 2nd DS rescanned as the sonographer couldn't get a clear view of his kidneys. Never occurred to me something was wrong. He was just being awkward!

Regenbogen22 · 22/04/2022 09:22

@LaddieCthulu oh that's fab news, thanks for updating!

I'm 25 weeks and the only thing I've bough is a baby bath 😂😂 I really have to start looking at prams and clothes etc

I went for the mama's and papa's Ocarro. I wasn't absolutely married to it, but after some reading I decided i would shortlist and get a travel system that both Which? And mumsnet ranked highly. And I wanted an all terrain! We went to view it, a second hand sale, and snapped it up at a good price. So it felt like a particularly momentous day!

Which? Give good guidance about what to check for in a second hand buggy. So now I want to go and push it round but have to wait a while!
