Rapid weight gain

Hi, I'm hoping for some advice or experience if possible please?

I'm 28 weeks at the moment in the last week I've gained over 8lb and it's not stopping, weighed myself this morning and I'm another 1lb up since yesterday and I'm panicking at the speed that the weight is going on.

My weight gain up until this point of my pregnancy has been stable and fine (e.g within recommended amounts).

I'm exercising pretty much daily (gym or 10k steps per day) and tracking what I'm eating so that within my calorie intake per what I burn etc.

Is this normal? Should I be worried? My partner is telling me not to worry and that everything is fine and it's just one of those things but it seems a huge amount to gain in one week and I'm worried it will continue now until the baby is born.

Has your exercise and calorie intake remained the same as it was before you starting gaining weight quickly?
If so, I would call someone. I don't want to scare you, but rapid and seemingly unexplained weight gain could possibly be a sign of preeclampsia, which could potentially develop at 28 weeks.
Hopefully it's not that, but it's definitely worth looking into just in case.
Are you feeling okay otherwise?

@IzzyLeigh that's one of my worries, it's such a huge amount so quickly I just can't work out how it can happen. Even if I've somehow overeaten this week 8lbs is massive 😖

I've walked 10k steps every day this week and eaten around 200 cals less than I've been burning as I'd begun to worry about the weight and was trying to see if it would slow down if I ate less.

I've felt really well for my whole pregnancy, felt a little more out of breath while walking this week but nothing that would make me worry.

I'm due to see the midwife on Wednesday, do you think I should raise it then?

@Charley678 yeah, that's super bizarre then. Like I said before, I don't want to worry you but, personally, I would call and let someone know about it today instead of waiting for Wednesday. That way they can make the judgment on whether or not it's something they think is immediately concerning. Can't hurt to call, right?
And who knows, maybe it's nothing and you're back to normal by Monday, but at least you'll have a little more peace of mind going into the weekend.

@IzzyLeigh thanks for your replies. I have called up and one lady referred me to triage as she said it could be a concern, then triage said not to worry 😧

I'm going to see if I can get my BP checked at a pharmacy this afternoon to put my mind at rest. Hopefully it'll all settle back to normal over the next few days 🙏🏻

@Charley678 I'm glad you called! That's frustrating that you were told it could be a concern and then triage said not to worry though. I think checking your blood pressure is a really good idea. That way, if it's high, you can call triage back with more info.
Also, do you feel like you've been gaining weight or is it just the scale saying so? I know it's an obvious thing, but it might be worth checking to make sure the scale isn't broken?

Hi, agree to double check with your MW but pregnancy weight does go in fits and starts. The metabolism changes a lot during pregnancy and weight gain won’t be a smooth curve. Fwiw I gained quite a lot over the recommended amount both times despite eating pretty healthily and moving. My pregnancies were still healthy and normal size babies! And the weight disappeared again after. That was just how my body did it.

I’m also 28 weeks (+4) and have gained a stack of weight this week.

Was 9st 8 on the day I got my BFP. Have gained steadily and was 10st 6 last week. Today I am 11st 3. Totally perplexed. My bump has grown a lot in the last week too. I didn’t really have much of a bump at all until this week. Been checked over by midwife and BP slightly low, have odema of the lower legs but apparently normal and bump is measuring 29cm (her chart put that at 97th centile Hmm).

I’m eating the same as normal. Nothing has changed. I feel very very pregnant all of a sudden!!
