You can eat shop bought Mayo. If it's homemade it's fine as long as it's made with red lion eggs.

Pamparam · 07/04/2022 13:54

No it’s not true.

Perhaps if you eat homemade raw egg mayo in another country where raw eggs are not perfectly safe.

But not in the UK.

ohidoliketobe · 07/04/2022 13:56

Mayonnaise made with pasteurised eggs is completely safe . So all of your shop bought stuff is fine, and the vast majority of restaurant stuff will be fine too

Stick to the NHS website or you'll drive yourself mad.

Honestly, if I avoided half the foods MIL / SIL / other well-meaning people have said I'd be living on peeled carrots and plain bread. SIL was convinced you couldn't eat eggs at all (cooked or otherwise!).

The advice while well meant has been outdated or misremembered. Better to stick with current guidelines.

Yes mayonnaise is fine. You can also eat under cooked eggs now as long as they are lion stamped, which almost all eggs sold in the UK will be.

just buy vegan mayo, it's nice, aldi sell it. everywhere does in fact. it's only 9 months.

Er, why?

Just buy normal mayo from a supermarket. It's pasteurised for goodness sake!!

Fleur405 · 08/04/2022 05:00

Mayonnaise used to be an issue - I dunno until the 80s maybe before they introduced the lion mark! Would only be an issue if made fresh using raw eggs which are not lion marked… so unless you’re making it fresh with eggs from your own free range chickens from your garden you should be good!

Agree with pp - follow the nhs advice and ignore all the unsolicited advice!

Please stick to NHS. For everyone out there saying yes just eat it is crazy and clearly have misunderstood. The hellmans website tells you the eggs are from Europe and although they are pasteurised they are NOT lion stamped. Heinz and hellmans and other shop bought mayo are low risk but not lion stamped and NHS advise strongly with regards to lion stamp and not pasteurisation.
